Welcome to Melbourne Latvian School, located at 3 Dickens Street, Elwood. Our school is a point of interest and an establishment that aims to introduce children to our homeland, Latvia. We achieve this through singing, dancing, religious teachings, and folklore classes in Latvian language. We also assist children in learning the Latvian spoken and written language in both formal and informal ways. Our hope is that this will foster understanding, respect, and love for their family history and ancestral land in our students. Additionally, we believe that being bilingual will provide children with numerous benefits and help them become more versatile and valuable members of society.

Our school caters to children from preparatory to grade eight and is located in the suburb of Elwood in Melbourne. We have a close partnership with Melbourne Latvian High School, sharing facilities and resources with them.

Our students come from various language proficiency levels, and in recent years, the disparity in language knowledge has increased, primarily because Latvian is no longer the main language in many households. However, this trend is mitigated by families who have recently immigrated from Latvia, as Latvian remains their primary language. We acknowledge the need to adapt our school activities and program to accommodate this growing difference in language proficiency.

Melbourne Latvian School is a branch of Melbourne Latvian Society and a member of Community Schools Victoria and the Victorian Department of Education-approved language school. As a result, we receive government funding and are responsible for maintaining a certain level of administrative and educational standards.
