"I bought a cubic metre of "vegetable garden soil" about six months back. I wish I hadn't bothered. What turned up was soil filled with small pieces of rubble. When it rained, the pale silt rose to the top and the majority of the soil clumped together, turning hard as rock, cracking across the surface through my veggie beds. Water struggles to seep down through the surface, pooling on the top and running across the dirt. Precious little has been able to grow in the stuff. I called and asked about it, thinking perhaps they'd delivered the wrong stuff. But when I described what I'd been delivered, I was told that was how it was "meant to be" - rubble and all (described as being for "drainage", like plant roots can grow through rocks). So now I'm slowly trying to replace it all, digging it up from garden beds and trying to break up the rock-like chunks enough for it to dissipate into the lawn. What a waste of time, money and effort dealing with this mess."
