About the Business
Welcome to Killary Sheep Farm, nestled in the idyllic countryside of Bunowen in Leenaun, County Galway, Ireland. Our farm is a family-run business that has been in operation for over thirty years, and we pride ourselves on showcasing the rich agricultural heritage of this picturesque region.
One of the primary experiences here at Killary Sheep Farm is our authentic sheepdog demonstration. Watch in awe as our skilled sheepdogs expertly herd the sheep around the fields, responding to the whistle and command of their handler. It's a fascinating sight to watch and offers visitors a deeper understanding of the work that goes into farming in this part of the world.
We also offer guided farm tours where visitors can learn about the history of the farm and the surrounding area and get up close and personal with our friendly sheep, cows, and horses. Our knowledgeable guides are on hand to answer any questions and share their expertise.
For visitors who want a truly immersive experience, we also offer a sheep herding experience. Under the guidance of one of our handlers, visitors can learn how to 'call' the dogs, how to handle the stick, and get a glimpse into the life of a farmer working with his dogs and livestock. It's an unforgettable occasion and a fantastic way to experience rural Ireland.
After your farm tour or sheepdog demonstration, why not visit our on-site café where we serve up delicious home-baked scones, cakes, and a selection of freshly brewed tea and coffee. "We had never visited a sheep farm before so my wife and I attended a morning session at Killary Sheep Farm. As the road doesn't support large buses there were no large tour groups which allows the group tour to be smaller and much easier to hear our guide as well as ask questions. The guide was outstanding and it was great to see how he and the sheep herding dog worked as a team. Highly recommend."
"Wish I could give more than 5 stars. This was a highlight of our trip to Ireland. We saw an absolute marvel sheepdog demonstration on a working sheep farm. The farmer/trainer was highly personable and full of information. The working relationship between “Holly” and he was nothing short of impressive. Holly was very excited to show us what she could do, and rightfully so! After the demo, we got the opportunity to help feed the lambs, who were adorable. Plenty of great info, eyes into the culture, and fun photo and video opportunities. This is great for all ages. Very cost efficient as well. We called ahead to make sure there was space and then bought tickets when we arrived."
"This was actually really fun. You watch the sheep dog round up the sheep over a beautiful meadow overlooking the water. Then there is a fun shearing demonstration in which you get to participate. On top of all that you feed the little lambs milk out of bottles. Wonderful fun."
"Fantastic experience which included watching the dogs round up the sheep, shearing and the toddlers/kids loved feeding the lambs with milk. Highly recommended not just for kids but adults too, quite educational and interesting. Also unbelievable scenery. Will definetly return when back in Mayo."
"A truly incredible experience! Our recent visit included: a sheepdog demonstration (featuring Holly the border collie) which was amazing and very cool to watch, and petting and bottle feeding baby lambs!! Tom (who runs the farm and is your tour guide) is a very nice, down to earth person who talked with us for as long as we liked about the farm, how he trains his dogs, and his experiences. We visited in early March, but if you want to bottle feed the lambs he said the best times are from mid-March to the end of April. There other activities that are also only available in the Summer due to the weather. Despite some rainy and cold weather, we all had a great time and the tour proved to be a highlight of our trip!! If you are visiting Ireland then this tour should be a requirement on your agenda."
