"Where do I begin to thank the wonderful staff here, from the beautiful nurse Katie who checked my husband in to the wonderful security man that kept me sane on the 2 occasions we were down last week before my husband was admitted to ward 3 Slieve Bloom ,the care he received was absolutely amazing so thank you all so much"
"When you attend A&E you always expect a bit of a wait, lots of people etc. Being greeted by a sign saying 4-6 hour wait wasn’t exactly what I expected. We were seen within a few minutes by the nurse, very nice woman, great with my daughter. Several hours later we were taken in through to A&E. The corridor itself was lined with chairs and people sitting, slouched, in pain, unwell and in need of better conditions than they were in. The registrar’s who attended us, communicated, while examining my daughter and taking her bloods, in their native language. If you are examining and taking bloods from a child, you communicate to her, not whispers between each other while taking bloods. We waited for nearly two hours for blood results. A consultant then came in and introduced himself and examined her again. Said very little and left. About an hour later, a fourth person, who never introduced himself came in and began to examine my daughter. ‘Shortly’ after, we were told we could leave, but first had to move to another room. We got up to move, then were told not to bother. But then we had to move to the corridor where my daughter and drip etc removed while standing at the end of the corridor. I’m annoyed at the lack of respect and common sense shown by the two registrar’s who didn’t have the common sense or common decency to speak English and re-assure my daughter. But also annoyed at the lack of support all hospitals get from the government. It’s disgraceful, but I do think Portlaoise could seriously raise their standards, specifically in communication to all patients in ENGLISH or Irish. Toilets filthy, waiting area smelled like cigarettes, no place to get a drink as vending machine was out of order and no suitable drinking water available."
"Had my son in December 2022 at the maternity unit. It was ok. Some nurses were nice but this particular nurse was mean to me when I was in labour. My labour was so painful and I was screaming and the nurse gave out to me for screaming. She made me feel like I was overdoing it but I was genuinely in so much pain and I couldn’t handle it. After my emergency c section I was put in a large room with other women who gave birth. Kinda annoying because other babies were crying so I couldn’t get any sleep myself. If I would go there again I would probably book my own private room. Dispute nurses being there I didn’t feel like I was helped. My husband wasn’t allowed to stay over and it was difficult for me to carry and lift my baby and I felt like the nurses were too busy to help."
"Was sitting in a and e for over 10 hours with all the symptoms of Meningitis after being told by the Midoc that PL Hospital can't leave me sitting there with symptoms like that, especially when i had a Doctors Note from my own GP. Was sent home after 10 hoyrs being told its "Viral" but only had bloods, urine test, heart tracing and xray of chest. The doctor who saw me didn't look at anything I was complaining about and took one look down my throat, that was it. Definitely do not recommend.was told to take paracetamol as pain relief which is a joke in itself"
