Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens
Pond Road, Tramore, , Ireland
About the Business
Welcome to the stunning Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, located on Pond Road in the picturesque town of Tramore. As an establishment, park, point of interest, and tourist attraction all rolled into one, our gardens offer visitors an immersive and authentic experience of traditional Japanese culture and design.
Named after the celebrated writer Lafcadio Hearn, who was born in Ireland and spent much of his life in Japan, our gardens are a tribute to his passion for Japanese art, literature, and gardens. Designed by landscape architect Anja Gohlke, the gardens feature a seamless blend of Japanese and Irish elements, creating a harmonious and tranquil oasis for visitors to explore and enjoy.
Spread across 1.5 hectares, our gardens offer a range of attractions and features, including a traditional teahouse, a pond, a waterfall, a zen garden, and a cherry blossom avenue. Whether you are seeking a moment of mindfulness, a romantic stroll, or a family outing, our gardens offer something for everyone.
In addition to our beautiful gardens, we also host a range of events and activities throughout the year, including traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, workshops on Japanese culture and crafts, and seasonal celebrations such as the Cherry Blossom Festival and the Autumn Moon Festival.
A visit to the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens is not just a chance to admire the beauty of nature, but also an opportunity to learn and appreciate the rich and fascinating history of Japanese culture. We invite you to come and discover the magic of our gardens for yourself, and to explore the unique connection between Ireland and Japan that permeates every corner of our institution.

"Lovely gardens to visit. Good guided paths to walk around. Sloping paths so pretty accessible all around. Tour should take about 30-45 mins. Nice cafe with good tea, coffee and cake! Plus great customer service. Reasonable entry price. Excellent view to the sea/bay, if weather permits."
"What a beautiful, tranquil and peaceful setting. The gardens are a wonderful sight to behold. It was so calming and whilst walking on the meandering paths via brooks, waterfalls, etc, the love story of it's being unfolds. Staff very welcoming and informative, cakes are mouth watering and our tour ended with us being photographed in the kimonos supplied by the gardens. Highly recommend, a must see ❤️"
"This is a very nice place in Tramore and well worth the trip from Waterford City. You can see different types of gardens (American (yes, really), Greek and of course Japanese). If you want to spend some time to relax, do not visit on a summer weekend, since there is a lot of background noise from the beach. You are in Ireland after all. I would recommend to google the story of Lafcadio for a better understanding of the man and his times."
"Absolutely fantastic spot to visit. It rained while there and even that didn't put a damper on the experience. The staff that we met were wonderful, super friendly and helpful. I already can't wait to visit again for beautiful nature and lemon drizzle cake!!"
"This is a jewel of a garden! Beautiful and tenderly maintained. Really worth exploring the individual garden spaces and taking time here. The gardener's were incredibly helpful, friendly and knowledgeable with our plant questions. Take time visit this amazing garden. PLUS! Nice tea room with wonderful views across the sea."
