Maternity Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus 1345 Govan Road, Glasgow G51 4TF

"*edited* So far our experience here has been unfriendly and illmannered. The majority of staff seem bothered that you are there to attend an appointment. Not sure why they chose this area in their field if they are so unhappy working in it. Also need to relax rules about husbands attending appointments, they wanted husband to leave the hospital for a 2 minute vaccination even though we had a couples allocated seat for a scan appointment immediately afterwards. If you expect this to be an enjoyable/happy experience like it should be, try and attend a different hospital. Came to my due date and needed to be induced, went with the baloon catheter which was awful and had to ask them to take it out due to the pain (of which the midwife seemed to think I was just being a drama queen) eventually took it out. Then was left with no explanation of what will happen next for 8 hours even after asking multiple times. Spent 3 nights on induction ward for absolutely no reason..my food was stolen out of the shared fridge, I was woken at ridiculous times throughout the night when I didn't even need to be there as I live within 20 minutes, and during hot weather the hospital is plagued with the smell of the next-door dump, disgraceful. Even my midwife who visited me after I eventually got home told me to put my experience in writing as she could not understand why I was made to stay and treated terribly with NO explanation of why I was there and when I could go to labour ward. This whole experience has put my husband and I off having more children in the future, and the thought of having to visit this hospital again makes me feel sick."

"All the staff have been excellent when my partner had our wee baby boy! Cant fault any of them. My only gripe is having to leave him when 2 visitors come in. Surely as the dad i should be allowed to stay? Having to sit outside the ward when my family are meeting my son for the first time is a bizarre rule that needs to change - fast!"

"I gave birth twice at this hospital in 2018 and 2021 and was completely let down by staff. The first time I was sent home at 4cm and told to return 4 hours later, almost giving birth alone on my sofa. The second time I had a lengthy discussion with the midwife - with 40 years experience under her belt - about the pain relief I wanted (morphine or epidural) before I was induced. She assured me that I just had to say the word and I could get the pain relief I wanted. Well when the time came I was told a member of staff had left with the medicine cupboard key and they were trying to track her down. I was left with a nurse who was flapping around like a headless chicken totally out her depth and sitting on her ipad without attending to me. I begged for pain relief and screamed in pain. A woman from theatre came into the room and started shouting aggressively in my face "you're having a baby! you're having a baby!" as if to tell me to get on with it and refused my epidural. This was all in between contractions. I'm still traumatised by the complete lack of care after being so reassured at the beginning. This was all following a sweep and balloon induction, which had no effect and I was told that I could have just stayed at home. Once my baby was born, the maternity ward was such a horrible and unwelcoming experience. Midwives were uncaring, arrogant and belittling. They refused to remove my painful canula even after I requested several times it be taken out so I could feed and change my baby. The midwives were making a lot of noise, laughing and joking through the night, slamming bins shut - no consideration whatsoever for new mums and their babies who have been up for days straight. After a night of no sleep, they came in at 7am and threw the curtains open and switched on all the ridiculously bright lights. I wasn't allowed to have the baby in the bed beside me while trying to get some rest and staff acted as if it was some kind of social club when it really felt like an institution. I'm so sad at the lack of care and it has completely put me off ever returning to this hospital to have a baby. I'm still traumatised at the whole experience and putting my trust in people who should be delivering on patient led care - instead I was neglected and made to suffer for no reason."

"Phenomenal care, the girls are caring, kind, efficient and helpful in all departments. I received such good service, with cups of tea, sandwiches, biscuits and even a footstool to help with nursing positions. Thank you, all 4 birth experiences (though none of them to plan) went smoothly, while still keeping autonomy over my choices."

"Whilst a bit spaced out still on gas and air, I promised the lovely obstetrician that I would leave a 5 star google maps review in lieu of repeat custom. The staff were caring and kind and my baby was born safely and well looked after pre and post-pregnancy whilst there."
