About the Business
Welcome to the Gate Theatre, located in the heart of Dublin, Ireland. Established in 1928, the Gate Theatre is a renowned institution that has been providing world-class theatre experiences for over nine decades. Our theatre is situated at Cavendish Row, Parnell Square E, Rotunda, in Dublin 1, and is a popular point of interest for locals and tourists alike.
At the Gate Theatre, we are committed to offering our audiences unforgettable theatrical experiences. We present a mix of classic and contemporary plays, adapting the most beloved works of literature and drama, and regularly commissioning new works. We strive to showcase the diversity of Irish theatre by featuring plays from renowned Irish authors like Samuel Beckett, Sean O'Casey, and Conor McPherson, as well as international playwrights.
Our iconic stage has hosted many historical productions, including the first Irish productions of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" and Harold Pinter's "The Birthday Party." Our theatre has also been the stage for award-winning performances by some of Ireland's most celebrated actors, including Michael Gambon, Ciarán Hinds, and Niamh Cusack.
Beyond just the performances, our historic building itself is an architectural masterpiece. The theatre's Galway limestone façade draws in visitors from afar, and the elegant foyer, with its glass chandelier, is a sight to behold. Our auditorium seats up to 371 guests, offering an intimate and immersive experience.
At the Gate Theatre, we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Our staff and actors come from diverse backgrounds, and we pride ourselves on our commitment to accessibility. We offer captioned, audio-described, and sign language interpreted performances, in addition to group and student discounts.
We also host a range of events, including post-show discussions, workshops, and readings. Our theatre bar offers a variety of refreshments, and we welcome you to relax and mingle with fellow theatre-goers.
In summary, the Gate Theatre is more than just a theatre - it is a hub for artistic and cultural experience. We invite you to join us in celebrating Irish theatre and to experience the magic for yourself. We look forward to seeing you soon!

"This 8s an iconic Dublin theatre. It is compact with all seating on the same level, giving all patrons a clear view of the stage. Even the back row is reasonably close to the stage by modern standards. Decent bar with friendly staff and a good selection of drinks. Unlike the Olympia and the Bord Gais theatres, you can get Guinness here.... A big plus in my opinion. If you want a drink at the interval, be sure to pre-order before the show."
"Superb theatre. We recently saw the wonderful production of Piaf which was deeply moving as well as beautifully acted and produced. The staff are all very pleasant and the actors are top class professionals. Our only complaint ever is the scarity of ladies toilets."
"Went to watch Piaf with my husband for date night! It was amazing, I personally cried at the end, it was very moving. The play doesn’t classify as a musical. Though there are many musical content. Cast was amazing and the team there where very hospitable. Strongly recommend"
"Beautiful building, well organised. As someone who works supporting adults with disabilities I can see ways this building might be difficult to navigate and be comfortable in depending on your needs. I would recommend contacting the staff before you attend if you have additional needs. I spoke to a member of staff and this was their recommendation. There is a more accessible entrance and lift, but it's at the rear of the building. If you need to leave during a show you can not come back in till intermission. The chairs are traditional, hard and small and may be uncomfortable or difficult to access for some people. Again there may be more accessible seating, but I would recommend contacting the theatre before hand."
"Thoroughly enjoyed Piaf! Although didn't appreciate mgmt trying to turf me out of seats because of a shift in premiere date. One polite NO to the person on the phone devolved into getting firm with mgmt about my refusal to move dates to sometime in January. Still a beautiful show."
