"We came for a spa experience here and there were some great positives. If it were just the hotel it would have been a 5 star review. It was clean and the facilities good, the room was very comfortable and staff lovely. Dinner at the Fat Abbot was very tasty and reasonably priced. Breakfast and afternoon tea were great too. The spa on the other hand was not such a great experience. First of all it was really busy, so we couldn't find anywhere to relax around the pool. I think the hotel and spa should warn you that as check in is at 2pm it is not a great idea to book treatments for the same time. It meant we had to take all our luggage with us to the spa and I don't know why, but they didn't tell us to go straight to the changing rooms and leave our things there, which would have made sense, instead they had us stay in our own clothes for our treatments and lug our bags around, which wasn't relaxing at all. I am sorry to say that the treatments were not great. The head shoulder and neck massage lasted about ten minutes (it was explained to me for longer than it lasted) and I felt zero affect from it. The express pedicure was not really a pedicure in my opinion. It was a cuticle treatment and repolish, so check what is involved before you book. There was nothing done to my feet, no buffing, no creams etc...there were ridges on my nails still..... it was a shame as the rest of the stay was perfect and great value for money. Maybe they are understaffed at the spa, they seemed like really nice people but the atmosphere was very flat and it all felt a bit rushed and half hearted. I visited the spa once before, a while ago, and the experience was much better."
"I have a lot of memories here. Many functions and weddings including my own several years ago which price wise was very competitive. The location is lovely and the staff were brilliant. As far as our wedding day was concerned; the event manager looked after us from start to finish. The day went super smoothly and we had a fantastic day with friends and family. Highly recommended."
"This was our 3rd stay at this lovely, old hotel. We had, in the past, been in an accessible room, but it wasn't quite what was needed. This time we booked a room in the refurbished coach house block. Much, much better. Parking available immediately outside the block. As always food great. Breakfast is a help yourself full English. Which was very good. Service as always, good. Staff very helpful and polite. Will be going again and will definitely ask for the same room. Would recommend."
"Stunning building with lovely clean rooms. Massive variety of food for breakfast. Every member of staff had a smile and a glow about them which was lovely to see. Can't fail this place at all. Even a bus stop outside direct into York city centre. If I could give you a tip it would be to book ahead for a table at the fat abbott. It gets very busy.we will definitely be back. Good work parsonage crew!"
"I stayed for 2 days on a business trip. The Hotel and facilities were generally good, but my room was tired. The room was clean and tidy, with a very comfortable bed. The furniture was a little old but functional. The Bathroom was again tired and shower poor. I don't want to paint too poor of a picture as the rest of the Hotel was very good. The Fat Abbot pub attached served good food and drinks. The lunches were again good and generous. Breakfast was plentiful and lots of choice. The pool was great as was the gym. Most staff were both friendly and helpful, but I sensed they needed a few more, which is not uncommon these days. I'd stay again, but would ask for a different style room"
