The Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre was officially opened in 2002 and has since welcomed countless visitors from all over the world who are eager to explore the site's rich history and natural surroundings. This impressive Victorian structure was created in 1875 in order to resolve a major issue with the transport of goods between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. The Anderton Boat Lift uses a unique hydraulic system to lift boats and barges up to a height of 50 feet – making it the world's first-ever boat lift of its kind!
One of the main draws of the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre is its variety of educational and interactive exhibits that shed light on the history of the lift and offer insight into the fascinating workings of the hydraulic system. Visitors are also invited to embark on a scenic journey aboard the Edwin Clark boat – during which they can watch the lift in action and appreciate the stunning scenery of the Cheshire countryside.
Moreover, the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre is a full-service travel agency that offers an array of helpful services including boat tours, bike rentals, fishing permits, gift shopping, and more. Visitors can also take a stroll on the delightful walkways along the River Weaver, where they can experience various species of wildlife, flora, and fauna.

"Wonderful visitors centre, very informative. Available to all mobilities. Suitable for children with vintage slot machines which use pre decimal pennies (available to buy from reception.) videos about the boat lift showing and plenty of beautifully painted items from canal boats. The cafe has quite an extensive menu at very reasonable prices. Large outdoor play area. The boat lift itself looks amazing and there are walks up it available for a reasonable price. The boat trip wasn’t working the day we went. The walks along the canal are in beautiful countryside."
"Free to enter, pay and display parking. Very interesting Victorian engineering. Visitors centre, children's play area, café & gift shop. Staff are all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is very good."
"It was a shame it wasn't working due to a technical issue the lift but really well laid out site. Free to enter unless you want to go on the barge they run. Nice cafe with viewing area and helpful staff. Really clean toilets. A++ place. Well done."
"A little disappointed that the lift wasn't working, undergoing maintenance at the moment. Great day out otherwise. Staff are very friendly, polite and helpful. Cafe is a little expensive but the coffee was good. It shuts at 4.30 but if you order after 3pm you get a paper cup instead of a proper one. Went on the boat ride which was very informative. Lots of country parks within walking distance. Dogs are welcome on leads but not on the boat. Toilets clean and well equipped. Whoe site is pram and wheelchair friendly. Will definitely return when the lift is working again."
"Haven't entered the lift yet but the visitor centre is very nice with lots of information a very nice coffee shop with some tasty cakes. Downstairs are lots of the old penny arcade machines from years ago. All the voulanteers were very helpful."
