Originally known as 'Sylliott Hill', the mansion was later renamed 'Ontario' in the 1880s to reflect the Canadian heritage of its new owner, Alexander William Robertson. Under Robertson's ownership, Labassa underwent a transformation into a magnificent thirty-five roomed mansion, thanks to the expertise of German-born architect John A. B. Koch, who redesigned the house in the French Second Empire style. In 1904, the mansion was renamed Labassa and became the residence of Melbourne's elite until 1920, when it was converted into flats.
