Warrington Domain Freedom Camping 1 Esplanade, Warrington, Otago 9471
About the Business
Welcome to Warrington Domain Freedom Camping, located at 1 Esplanade in Warrington, New Zealand. As a campground and lodging establishment, we provide a unique opportunity for responsible freedom campers to enjoy the beauty of our city.
Here at Warrington Domain, we understand the popularity of freedom camping among both domestic and international visitors. To ensure the protection of our communities, cemeteries, scenic bush, and wildlife environments, the Dunedin City Council has implemented a Camping Control Bylaw. This bylaw includes some restrictions that campers must adhere to.
In order to accommodate all campers, we encourage those in tents and non-self-contained vehicles to stay at licensed camping grounds as a first option. It is important for campers to arrive early and familiarize themselves with the designated camping areas, and if necessary, find an alternative site if the current one is full.
Certified self-contained vehicles are permitted to stay overnight on most gravelled or sealed Dunedin City Council land designated for parking, with a few exceptions outlined below. It is crucial for campers to comply with the rules and regulations set by the Freedom Camping Act 2011, as infringement offenses and penalties are enforced.
To ensure a peaceful environment for all, we kindly request that campers arrive at the site before 10:00pm to minimize vehicle noise and lights that may disrupt sleep. We also urge campers to respect our environment by utilizing the provided rubbish and toilet facilities.
For self-contained vehicles, a maximum stay of two consecutive nights is allowed, and vehicles must be parked in marked parking spaces. Non-self-contained vehicles are permitted to park for up to two consecutive nights between 1 November and 30 April each year.
Please note that vehicles parked in leased car parks may be towed at the owner's expense. Additionally, parking charges apply Monday to Saturday between 8:00am and 6:00pm. It is the camper's responsibility to be aware of the designated camping areas and find alternative sites if needed.
At Warrington Domain, we prioritize the preservation of our environment. We provide rubbish and toilet facilities for campers' convenience, and we kindly request that these facilities be used accordingly. Failure to comply with the rules may result in a $200 fine.
If you are looking for a designated area for freedom camping without tents, the Ocean View Recreation Reserve is available. However, the maximum stay for all campers at this reserve is two consecutive nights, with departure by 8:30am. We once again request campers to arrive before 10:00pm to avoid disturbance to residents and fellow campers.
In the event that the designated area at Ocean View is full, Brighton Caravan Park and Taieri Mouth Holiday Camp nearby offer alternative camping options, including for late arrivals. Please refrain from driving into Baldwin Street, the world's steepest street, as there is no turning or exit available.
To ensure the smooth operation of our camping areas, we conduct regular night patrols. Anyone found camping in a prohibited area will receive a $200 fine. Dump stations for waste disposal are available at most local holiday parks and some petrol stations, which are marked on our map.
If you encounter freedom campers in non-designated areas or experience any issues, please contact the Dunedin City Council at 03 477 4000. For wildlife or conservation concerns, the Department of Conservation can be reached at 03 477 0677.
For further information and assistance, we invite you to visit the Dunedin i-SITE, where our friendly staff can provide you with a freedom camping map and other valuable information to enhance your visit to Dunedin. The i-SITE also offers free advice, information, and bookings for all Dunedin visitor attractions, activities, and accommodation. Additionally, they can assist with transport, accommodation, and activity bookings for the rest of New Zealand. Located conveniently close to central city amenities, the i-SITE is also home to a souvenir store.
Please be aware that the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act is now in effect, bringing about changes to freedom camping. Some of these changes have already been implemented, while others will be rolled out over the next 24 months. For further information, please visit the MBIE website at www.mbie.govt.nz/freedomcamping.
We look forward to welcoming responsible freedom campers to Warrington Domain Freedom Camping and ensuring a memorable and enjoyable stay in our beautiful city of Dunedin.
