About the Business
Welcome to Fletcher House, New Zealand's only fully restored Edwardian Villa located in Dunedin on Portobello Road. This charming establishment is not just an ordinary tourist attraction, but a true point of interest for those seeking to experience the nostalgia of a bygone era.
Imagine stepping back in time to a period without electricity or modern conveniences. Fletcher House allows you to witness firsthand how your grandparents or great-grandparents lived, offering a unique insight into the daily lives of early 20th-century New Zealanders. From cooking on a coal range to braving the chilly winter weather to use the outside loo, Fletcher House presents an authentic glimpse into the past.
Built in 1909 by Sir James Fletcher, the founder of Fletcher Construction Company Ltd, this Edwardian villa holds great historical significance. It was the first house ever constructed by Sir James, who went on to establish one of New Zealand's largest building and construction businesses. In December 1990, Fletcher Challenge made the decision to restore and open Fletcher House to the public, making it the first villa in New Zealand accessible for all to enjoy.
Today, Fletcher House stands as a meticulously restored time-capsule, showcasing the elegance and grandeur of the Edwardian era. Furnished in the style of the period by the esteemed Toitu Otago Settlers Museum, every detail has been carefully attended to, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the ambiance of the early 1900s.
Guided tours of Fletcher House are available from 11am to 4pm on weekends and public holidays, excluding Christmas Day. For a nominal fee of $10 per person, you can explore this remarkable piece of history and gain a deeper appreciation for the heritage of New Zealand. As a special offer, until September 30, 2020, we are accepting gold coin donations instead of the regular admission fee.
While you're visiting Fletcher House, we encourage you to make the most of your time on the Otago Peninsula. This beautiful region is renowned for its natural beauty and wildlife, including the famous Taiaroa Head. As Sir David Attenborough himself once said, "Otago Peninsula and Taiaroa Head is a unique and very special place. It is a place that every visitor to Dunedin should see." So why not plan a full day of exploration and discover all that this remarkable area has to offer?
Come and experience the magic of Fletcher House, where the past comes alive and memories are made. Step into our fully restored Edwardian Villa and embark on a journey through time. We look forward to welcoming you to this extraordinary piece of New Zealand's history.

Reviews
"Fascinating, house I lived in had been charged from these original bones, expanding. Interesting to see how would have been, really beautiful."
"Amazing place. You get to experience a house during the Edwardian era (although there are elements of Victorian elements). You get to learn about the history of the place and insights about the Fletcher family. If you aren't aware or if you are like me an international living in NZ - Fletcher is a very popular construction company here Personally I enjoyed the tour. You'll spend about an hour or two here. Looking through things. It's a blast from the past"
"The old building is worth to visit. Thanks Kathy, She spent around two hours to show us the history of our NZ and take the memory back to Scotland, and lots of interesting reasons behind the building and the things."
"Our house was built around same time. Interesting to see what it would have looked like."
"Just walked past this house on the corner. It seems okay, not that old really. Would not know it was of any significance if not for the sign outside it."
