About the Business
Welcome to Mount Cargill Lookout, a captivating establishment nestled in the heart of Dunedin, New Zealand. With its commanding presence on the northern skyline, Mount Cargill offers an unparalleled vantage point for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding area.
Perched majestically atop the rugged summit is a transmitting station, bravely weathering the elements as it provides television and radio services to the nearby regions. The summit itself is accessible through a network of connecting walks and a rough road, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
One of the most beloved walks towards the summit begins at the enchanting old growth forest in Bethune's Gully. As you traverse the well-maintained path, you'll find yourself ascending through a lush rainforest teeming with a symphony of birdlife. Occasionally, the forest canopy parts, revealing breathtaking vistas that will leave you in awe.
As you near the summit, the rainforest gradually fades away, replaced by panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see, encompassing the greater Dunedin area. The path becomes steeper in some areas, requiring a bit of effort, but the reward is well worth it.
For those eager to continue their exploration, a connecting track leads to the Organ Pipes, where nature's geological wonders await. These towering rock formations are a testament to the power and beauty of the natural world.
To embark on this unforgettable journey, simply follow North Road towards Normanby, then turn left onto Norwood Street until you reach the entrance to Bethune's Gully, clearly marked on your left. Ample parking is available, and bus services operate within walking distance. Alternatively, you can opt to drive directly to the summit via Cowan Road.
In addition to the awe-inspiring Mount Cargill Lookout, you'll also find a picturesque peninsula beach nearby. With its magnificent views, expansive sand dunes, and abundant local wildlife, it's the perfect place to unwind and take a leisurely stroll.
So whether you're seeking panoramic vistas, a connection with nature, or simply a serene escape from the bustling city, Mount Cargill Lookout is the ideal destination for you. Come and experience the enchantment for yourself.

Reviews
"Truly a fantastic spot to visit to capture the whole region in one shot. Check for road conditions, only 10km drive from city centre."
"You can always see the tower from afar. And always want to reach the top. You can either drive your car or hike. But either way, it's worth it. While driving here , you pass some farms. Serenely beautiful and peaceful. When you reach the top, on one side you have the mountain and the otehr is the sea. Whata combination. And don't mix it with mount Kargill of Asia though."
"Amazing views as always. For those who haven't been before Cowan Road to the lookout is gravel so it does have some potholes and ridges. Drive carefully."
"Great viewpoint - a short drive from the city to see in the evening, or a long walk up from Bethune's Gully or Sawyers Bay. If you drive to the top it's a fairly easy but fun walk to Buttars Peak to see more!"
