About the Business
Welcome to Quirky Woods glamping cabins, located at Maketu, Arawa Avenue, 1 in New Zealand. We are an establishment that offers lodging and is a point of interest for travelers seeking a unique and memorable experience.
Kia Ora! Hello! We are long-time residents of the wider Tauranga area and moved to Maketu in 2014 for a quieter coastal lifestyle that is still within easy driving distance to all the attractions that Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, and Rotorua have to offer.
Simon, one of the owners, is a passionate drummer and currently plays in two bands, including Kaos and Tauranga's monthly Blues Night. Rehearsals and gigs are a regular part of his life. He is also the chief groundskeeper at Quirky Woods and manages his own business called Aprons and More.
Charlotte, the other owner, works part-time in the Western Bay of Plenty community and takes care of the daily business of hosting guests. She loves yoga and enjoys adding fun touches to the property. Currently, a driftwood gallery is taking over all available wall space!
Our family includes a friendly and goofy Great Dane X puppy who was born in August 2017. She is the size of a miniature horse and loves having guests at Quirky Woods. We also have two chickens clucking away.
Our unique home, built in 1980, shares the garden space with The Garden Room. We also have a separate sleepout that was previously used as a tool shed but has now been converted into a gorgeous shared guest toilet and shower facility. The shower is amazing! Next to The Garden Room, there used to be a kiln, but it has been removed and converted into a shared guest kitchenette/BBQ and covered seating area.
Quirky Woods gained local fame when it was used as one of the locations for the filming of "The Z Nail Gang" in 2013, an anti gold-mining drama with quintessential Kiwi humor.
In 2017, we moved two more cabins onto our property during a very wet winter and completed tasks as the weather allowed. In January 2018, we opened The Garden Room, followed by The Morepork Forest Cabin and The Cozy Cottage in May 2018. We are now celebrating our 4th year!
Our space spans across 6 acres of lush green backdrops, including forests, NZ bush, and orchard/vineyard areas. It is situated in a valley that collects water during wet times, adding to the natural spring that fills two ponds. Native birds are abundant in our surroundings.
Newdicks Beach is just a short 10-minute walk away or can be accessed by car via a private road (fee applies).
At Quirky Woods, we offer three glamping cabin-style rooms, each with its own distinctive and diverse setting on the property. These rooms are perfect for couples or those seeking some quality time for themselves. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate children or pets, and we do not offer long-term stays or emergency accommodation. However, The Garden Room can accommodate an additional single mattress on the floor for a third person for an extra charge.
Each cabin features a queen bed and unique decor and features that blend seamlessly with their surroundings. We provide all bedding, towels, and other essentials. Each cabin is equipped with heating, electric blankets, outdoor seating areas, and outdoor furniture. Parking is ample and free.
To book your stay at Quirky Woods, you can contact us directly by calling or texting 027 3444 278. Please note that we accept cash or online banking payments, as we do not have credit card facilities. You can also find us on AirBnB or Booking.com for easy online booking.
Quirky Woods is conveniently located within an easy drive to Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, Te Puke, Whakatane, and Rotorua. It serves as an ideal base for exploring the wider Bay of Plenty area.
Simon, Charlotte, and their Great Dane puppy are thrilled to welcome guests to Quirky Woods. They are passionate about providing a relaxing and recharging experience in lush natural surroundings. With three unique rooms offering different levels of seclusion and distance to shared amenities, Quirky Woods is the perfect hideaway for couples to disconnect from technology and connect with each other.

Reviews
"Phenomenal place, we stayed in January 2022 and it was utter perfection. we were looking for something remote as we wanted to just be able to arrive and hibernate comfortably for a few days, this did the trick, the facilities were wonderful, very well kitted out, we spent four days lazing in the gardens reading, walking to the beach for swims, cooking on the barbecue, playing games and relaxing. Hosts were amazing, very attentive and friendly without being imposing. We were invited to stomp grapes for wine and watch a rock band rehearsal on their land, cant thank Charlotte and Simon enough for such a wonderful time and making us so comfortable and welcome, it was and remains my favourite trip since living in New Zealand (still thinking about it in detail nearly 12 months later!! - this review is very overdue) We will definitely be booking here again and highly recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful, beautiful and comfortable break."
"I didn't really know what I was booking I the beginning, but the place exceeded my expectations. Was perfect level of comfort and cosiness to be honest. The natural bush around was spectacular and Charlotte was an amazing host. Felt private and we were well looked after. Have recommended to others and will continue to."
"Just what we needed to recharge the batteries. This is a "farm" and have 3 options to stay in - you stay in the forest, halfway up the hill or in the sleep-out next to the house. Although no wifi at the furthest cottage, the phone signal is still strong. The cottage is tiny but full of character. 12 minutes walk to a very nice beach. Awesome place to be away from the normal traffic, motel life and city life."
"The best place we slept on a trip to New Zealand. The cottage has its own climate, it is wild, quiet there, only the birds singing. The service is very nice and their "tiny" Mojo dog is very friendly and keeps company. I highly recommend this magical place. We would love to go back again :)"
"What a superb little hideaway Quirky Woods is. I could hear nothing but the birds and the surf. A blissfully serene break with lovely hosts Charlotte and Simon and their gorgeous Great Dane Mojo. It is hard to find a little spot where you can unwind in just a weekend but this piece of paradise has it all. Thank you, our stay was just perfect."
