In Dunedin, there are several dog parks available, including our very own Shand Park. However, it's important to note that the East Taieri dog park on Cemetery Road will be closed on Monday, 10 July 2023, for maintenance work in the carpark. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, the closure may extend to Tuesday, 11 July to ensure the completion of the necessary work.

Additionally, the Dunedin City Council will be conducting goat control work in various areas, such as Silverstream, Flagstaff, Swampy Summit, Mt Cargill, and Mihiwaka, from Monday, 14 August until Friday, 8 September 2023. This pest control initiative aims to preserve the health of our parks and reserves, as feral goats can cause significant damage to trees, understory, vegetation, and plantings. Warning signs will be placed at major access roads and track entry points to inform visitors about the ongoing goat control operations. While the areas will remain open to the public, it's crucial to be aware of hunters operating in the vicinity. No hunting activities will take place during weekends, and walking tracks will not be used for shooting purposes, although staff from High Country Contracting may utilize them to access remote areas of the reserve.

At Shand Park - Dog Exercise Area, your dog does not necessarily have to be on a leash, but it must be under control at all times. Our park offers a safe and secure environment for your four-legged companions to enjoy themselves.

To ensure the well-being of our parks and reserves, it is essential to clean up after your dog. Please remember to pick up all droppings and take them with you when leaving the area.

While there are specific areas in Dunedin where dogs are not allowed or require a permit for access, we have provided a comprehensive list of locations where you can walk your dog on a leash. If your dog is securely controlled with a leash or chain, you may also walk through a prohibited area to reach an exercise area.

At Shand Park - Dog Exercise Area, we prioritize the safety and enjoyment of both dogs and their owners. We kindly request that female dogs on heat are not brought into any public place, including dog parks, even if they are on a leash.

Please keep in mind that the regulations mentioned above do not apply to disability assist dogs, police dogs, working dogs, dogs confined in an efficient container, or securely confined by lead or restraint on a vehicle.
