One of the conditions we specialize in is hepatitis. Acute hepatitis infection may cause discomfort, but most people recover fully. A simple blood test can determine if the hepatitis B virus is still present in the blood or if the body has successfully eliminated it. Chronic hepatitis B, on the other hand, occurs when the virus remains in the blood and liver for more than 6 months. This can lead to long-term liver damage, including scarring and cancer. Our focus is on preventing such complications and providing appropriate treatment.

In New Zealand, we have access to an effective medication called Maviret for hepatitis C. The majority of people with hepatitis C can be cured with an 8-week course of this treatment, resulting in over 90% cure rate.

At Dr Janice Wong, we also offer breath testing, a noninvasive test that measures the amount of hydrogen or methane you breathe out after consuming a glucose and water mixture. This test can indicate bacterial overgrowth in your small intestine. Two separate breath tests are required, with the initial test using lactulose to determine whether you produce hydrogen or methane. If necessary, methane testing will be used instead, and the samples will be sent to Auckland for analysis.
