Horseshoe Lake Reserve Burwood, Christchurch, Canterbury 8061
About the Business
Welcome to Horseshoe Lake Reserve, located in Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. This establishment is not your ordinary park - it is a point of interest that offers a unique experience for visitors.
Before the earthquake, visitors were able to take a leisurely stroll around the lake itself, immersing themselves in the native wetlands and eventually reaching the pump house on New Brighton road. Although this is no longer possible, the Reserve still spans an impressive length of 5.66 kilometres and features a second jetty structure that extends over a beautiful wetland area off Broomfield Terrace.
Originally known as Waikākāriki, Horseshoe Lake Reserve is a serene and picturesque wetland reserve. As you enter the Reserve, you will come across a small wooden jetty located at the carpark off Lake Terrace Road, providing a perfect spot for relaxation and tranquility. Families particularly enjoy feeding the ducks, geese, and swans, but it is advised to keep them away from the road for their safety.
Throughout the Reserve, you will find several seats where you can sit and appreciate the peaceful surroundings. Additionally, there are three designated dog parks, two of which are fully enclosed. One of the dog parks has fences along the road but is open at both ends, serving as part of a walkway.
In ancient times, Waikākāriki, which means "Horseshoe Lake," was a significant Māori settlement called Te Oranga. The lake itself was named Waikākāriki, combining the words "wai" meaning water and "kākāriki" which has various meanings including green, a type of green lizard, or a green parakeet or parrot. It is believed that the lake was once connected to the Avon River (Ōtākaro River) but became isolated when the river found a more direct route to the sea. The lake has also received Heritage Site status, highlighting its historical and cultural significance.
Horseshoe Lake receives water from various streams, drains, and stormwater pipes, which is then pumped into the River Avon through the largest pump house in Christchurch. Built in 1979, Pump Station 205 plays a crucial role in land drainage and flood protection for the surrounding area. In 2017, it was agreed that significant funds would be allocated to restore the pump station's capacity, improve its reliability, extend its lifespan, and ensure resilience against future sea level rise. This project also includes the installation of fish-friendly passages for inanga (whitebait), allowing them to travel between the Avon River and Horseshoe Lake more easily, benefitting the ecological balance of this important area.
Whether you are seeking peace and serenity, a place to walk your furry friend, or a glimpse into the rich history of the region, Horseshoe Lake Reserve promises to offer a memorable experience for all who visit. Come and explore this beautiful wetland reserve and immerse yourself in the natural beauty that New Zealand has to offer.

"Beautiful peaceful place to watch ducks, swans"
"Feeding the ducks. Great fun for kid's."
"Nice place to walk, chill, feed ducks and eels."
"Quite an attractive side river area off the Avon River. Usually lots of ducks. Quite a variety of different breeds. A number of geese, usually in a different area, with a few swans. At the moment there is a pair of Black Swans with some older Cygnets. Most of the birds gather around a very small pier during the day hoping for people to feed them. There are public toilets off the end of River Rd. Be careful not to feed much bread as it can be detrimental to the health of the birds. Wheat, is probably a better option. Try throwing it on the platform. Some of the birds will eat other foods. e.g. diced, half cooked potatoes, carrots. Lettuce is also ok for some. It's a lovely place in summer. Not too bad in winter. Lots of trees and an embankment to sit and watch. A couple of garden seats not far from the public toilets. Personally I love going there."
"Lovely place to stop and feed the ducks. Have a stroll around. Baby shags in trees at the moment. We'll worth a look"
