Nga Hau E Wha Marae 3 Bracken Street, Leamington, Cambridge, Waikato 3432
About the Business
Welcome to Ngā Hau E Whā Marae, located in Cambridge, New Zealand. Nestled on the edge of Leamington, in Waipā, Waikato, our marae offers a beautiful setting overlooking Kemureti (Cambridge) across the Waikato River.
With its establishment dating back to the early 1940s, the marae building was completed in 2008 through the dedication and efforts of the local whānau and community. Situated on the corner of Bracken Street and Pope Terrace, our marae is conveniently located just one kilometer from Cambridge Town Centre.
Our complex features spacious lawns, large dining and wharenui facilities, off-road parking, and a fully equipped kitchen with a walk-in chiller. These amenities make it an ideal venue for tangihanga, gatherings, and accommodation for small or large groups.
Centrally located, our marae is just minutes away from Lake Karāpiro, Hamilton Airport, and Mystery Creek Events Centre. Additionally, it offers easy access to Tauranga, Rotorua, Raglan, Auckland, and Taupō, all within a one to one-and-a-half-hour drive.
Ngā Hau E Whā Marae is situated within the iwi boundaries of Ngāti Koroki, Ngāti Haua, and Ngāti Wairere, and has always received support from the tangata whenua, the people of the land.
We would like to acknowledge Steven Tipene, the talented carver behind the intricate whakairo (carving) over the wharenui entrance. The name Ngā Hau E Whā translates to "The Four Winds" in te reo Māori, representing a meeting place for people from all corners of the world.
Our main house, Te Puawaitanga, symbolizes continual blossoming, while the dining hall, Te Reo Kāranga, represents the welcoming call to everyone. The whakairo showcases the different carving styles of the four winds/regions of Aotearoa New Zealand, including Te Tairāwhiti on the left, the West Coast next, Te Tai Tonga on the right, and far right Te Tai Tokerau.
To honor pro-creation, the carver has included depictions of birds and bees in the whakairo. It is also worth mentioning that two men, Harry Wahapu and Ropere Ropere Tipene, have been inserted into the carving, representing the former Marae Chairman and the carver's grandfather, respectively.
