Welcome to Procope Coffee House, a charming cafe located at 165 Victoria Street in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our establishment is not just a cafe, but also a point of interest and a restaurant, offering delicious food in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The history of Procope Coffee House dates back to 1686 when the very first French cafe, 'Le Procope', opened its doors in Paris. Named after its owner, Francesco Procopio de Coltelli, the cafe quickly became a popular spot for artists and comedians from the nearby Comedy Francasie, the national theatre of France. Even during the turbulent times of the French Revolution, influential figures such as Danton, Marat, Robespierre, and Benjamin Franklin frequented Le Procope for conspiratorial discussions and fine-tuning the American Constitution.

In 1990, Hummingbird Coffee was founded and began roasting their coffee beans at 165 Victoria Street, before relocating to their current site in Addington. However, in April 2013, a new chapter in the Procope story began with the opening of our cafe in Fendalton. It was a temporary home while we awaited the fate of our beloved Victoria Street building.

After extensive repairs and renovation, we were thrilled to return to our original Victoria Street site in August 2014. We sold our Fendalton cafe in December 2016 to focus on our Victoria Street location, and we are grateful for the loyalty of our customers who stuck by us during those challenging years.
