About the Business
Welcome to Karakariki Waterfall, a stunning tourist attraction located in the beautiful Karakariki Scenic Reserve in the Waikato region of New Zealand. This establishment is a true point of interest for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful escape into the wilderness.
Situated at Whatawhata, Karakariki Valley Road, our institution offers visitors a unique and memorable experience. The journey to the waterfall begins with a scenic walk that takes approximately 20 minutes from the car park. The trail is well-marked and features suspension bridges at both the start and end, adding an element of excitement to your adventure.
As you make your way through the track, you'll be mesmerized by the picturesque surroundings. The path winds through a small bush remnant and open grassy areas, creating a serene atmosphere. After crossing the second bridge, you'll soon reach the captivating waterfall. This spot is perfect for a family picnic, allowing you to relax and enjoy the tranquil ambiance while the kids have fun paddling in the stream. For an even better picnic experience, cross the ford on the true right of the stream and discover a delightful picnic spot.
If you're feeling adventurous, explore upstream beyond the waterfall and keep an eye out for fossils in the rocks and water. On the true left, just a short distance from the second suspension bridge, you can cross the unbridged stream and embark on a steep climb up to a bush-covered ridge. Please note that the track ends at the boundary fence, and climbing over it is strictly prohibited.
Karakariki Waterfall is a fantastic destination for families, offering a child-friendly track that is suitable for all ages. However, it's important to be aware that the trail can get muddy, especially during winter. Nevertheless, this makes it an ideal spot for summer walking, when the weather is perfect for exploring the great outdoors.
To reach our location, simply turn off the Hamilton/Raglan Highway (SH23) into Karakariki Rd, then take a left onto Karakariki Valley Rd, which will lead you directly to the car park at the road end.

"This is a beautiful walk, I went on this hike with a school camp & it was so exilerating with the most beautiful scenery. There is a picnic table at the end of the walk, so be sure to take food to enjoy at the end."
"Small little car park at the end of Karakariki valley rd, then walk through the cow run to the start point at the fence and signs. It's a nice easy walk starts off with walking over suspension bridge then along side the stream/river then you'll come to the 2nd fence that you'll need to climb over not long before getting to the 2nd and last suspension bridge just before getting to the waterfall itself. Water is nice and cold for swim on a hot day."
"Nice track into the site. Track includes crossing the stream in two places using swing bridges. A number of stiles to pass fences. Some trip hazards and slippery sections. Need to have confidence and good balance to make the walk. Well worth the walk in through bush most of the way. Nice pool for kids to swim in at the falls. Final climb down from the track to the falls requires using a rope."
"Not that impressive. the walk out is a nice walk. Though I strongly suggest not doing it after rain as the mud, puddles and slippery tracks make it a less enjoyable walk. There are some fun bridges, but the waterfall itself isn't that impressive."
"Good and easy walking tracks for children. The track starts from the car park and began with a small suspended walking bridge, fun for kids to cross. This way leads to the waterfall and it is easy accessible. We took another route and went all the way uphill. It was not too hot, neither cold, comfortable to walk for 2 hours. There was only one table for picnic closer to the waterfall, which takes around 10min from the car park. We actually went there to find small samples of fossils, but didn’t find any. Will try next time."
