About the Business
Welcome to Kauri Loop Track, a breathtaking establishment and park located in Ngāruawāhia, New Zealand. Situated in the stunning Hakarimata Scenic Reserve in the Waikato region, this track offers a truly immersive and unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts and tourists alike.
As you embark on the Kauri Loop Track, you'll begin with a flight of stairs that gradually levels out, allowing you to take in the mesmerizing views of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, you'll pass by an ancient pa site, concealed by lush vegetation, and venture through regenerating native bush until you reach a magnificent kauri tree estimated to be over a thousand years old.
Continuing on, the track leads you past the site where a large kauri tree fell in 2009, and through a grove of young kauri, known as rickers, until you reach a viewpoint that offers panoramic vistas of the forest. At this point, you have the option to either return the way you came or complete the full loop.
For those seeking even more awe-inspiring views, a climb awaits through stands of towering rimu trees, leading to an excellent viewpoint overlooking Huntly and the North Waikato lakes. If weather conditions are favorable, you can continue on the Hakarimata Walkway to the Southern Lookout, which offers sweeping views extending from Hamilton to Tongariro National Park.
As you descend on the loop track, you'll pass through a captivating grove of nikau palms, reaching a lower viewpoint and the convenient car park. The track is easily accessible, located 6.9 km south of Huntly and 11.2 km north of Ngaruawahia. Simply follow Hakarimata Road and turn onto Parker Road to reach the starting point.
We kindly request that you utilize the magnificent new boot cleaning station at the beginning of the track. This is to prevent the spread of kauri dieback, as our footwear can carry spores that harm these precious trees. Please note that the No Entry sign near the boot cleaning station is simply to indicate which lane you should use, and not to keep you off the track.
Visit Kauri Loop Track and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Hakarimata Scenic Reserve. Discover the ancient kauri trees, breathtaking viewpoints, and the serene beauty of the Waikato region.

"Great short walk, number of steps but does have seats to enjoy. The Kauri Grove is a wonderful site, and the mature trees are a fantastic site. The track and signage are great. the view from the top lookout is worth the extra few minutes walk, highly recommended walk."
"Medium to easy track with Giant Kauri tree and Kauri Grove. The loop is about 40 minutes. We really enjoy the Last Kauri. It’s like a quiet giant. As a history fan, I kept on thinking what happened in the last Millennium. When we have a different perspective, you can see they are the owner of the planet."
"The main loop trail is very well defined. If you take the trail from upper lookout to southern lookout, prepare for a bit of a challenge but nothing a moderate hiker can't overcome. Short trail overall but very steep! Make sure to have water on hand during!"
"I'm recovering from spinal surgery and need to challenge myself and build fitness. This climb certainly did that. The track forks off after about 200 metres but we carried on the steep path up. In places the stairs seemed more like a ladder! After 900m, we came to the top of the ridge and that showed we had another 120m to the upper viewing point. At the top, Waikato's foggy winter weather provided an almost total whiteout at first but just for a few moments as I had my camera out, some fog lifted and we were rewarded with great views of some peaks. On the way down, we headed left and took the easier but longer route down (1.7km). Not easy but also not onerous; kids may complain if you go straight up as we did. If you do take kids, I'd recommend taking the first right fork you come to."
