About the Business
Welcome to The Willows, a premier non-motorised recreation destination nestled in the heart of West Melton, New Zealand. Developed in collaboration with Environment Canterbury and the Selwyn District Council, The Willows was created to cater to the needs of the rapidly expanding population, offering a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Situated at the end of Thompsons Road, off Old West Coast Road, The Willows boasts a range of amenities and activities to ensure a memorable experience for all visitors. Our picturesque park is equipped with spacious picnic areas, convenient parking facilities, and designated fishing points, allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature. For those traveling with a motorhome, the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association parking area provides a comfortable space to rest and rejuvenate.
Embark on a leisurely stroll or invigorating bike ride along our shared walking and cycling trails, which wind through the enchanting surroundings of The Willows. As we are located beside the scenic Waimakariri River, fishing enthusiasts will find an abundance of opportunities to cast their lines and reel in the catch of the day. Please note that a valid fishing license from Fish & Game New Zealand is required.
For our furry friends, we have thoughtfully created a 4.3-hectare dog park complete with agility equipment, open spaces, and picnic areas. However, please ensure that your dogs are under effective control at all times to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all park visitors.
To stay up to date with the latest information and upcoming events, we encourage you to check our notices or follow us on Facebook. The Willows is open from 6am daily, with gates closing at 7.30pm during winter and 6am to 10.30pm during daylight saving. We kindly ask that freedom camping is not permitted within the park.
The development of The Willows was a collaborative effort with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, and their members are welcome to stay and experience the beauty of our park. Our location in West Melton, coupled with the proximity to the Waimakariri River, offers a multitude of recreational possibilities for visitors of all ages.
Previously a beloved spot for families, The Willows has breathed new life into the West Melton area, providing a cherished space for generations to come. As a reflection of the growing population in the Selwyn district, this park stands as a testament to our commitment to providing green spaces and recreation opportunities for all.
Come and explore The Willows, where non-motorised recreation and the serenity of nature harmoniously coexist. We look forward to welcoming you to this idyllic haven in West Melton.

"Great place to take a dog, go for a walk, ride some motorbikes, or have a picnic. One of my favorite places to go."
"Great spot. Note the access road is gravel so yes your car will get dirty. Sad to see some people had left litter including a nappy beside the river. I found the river warm in this location. Camping ground limited to members only."
"What a treasure on the western outskirts of Christchurch. So much to do .. lovely safe dog park for the fur babies, picnic areas, walking and biking trail, river access and camping area for NZ Motor Caravan association member's"
"A nice vantage point to watch the Waimakariri river flows past the Canterbury plain. A stunning place to go for a relaxing walk and view the sunset. The last kilometre of road leading to the car park is just non-asphalt surfaced. You must drive slowly with care to avoid rock chipping onto your windscreen."
"Great place for a picnic, or take your family for a bike ride on the well made track (4.5 km loop) with gentle twist and turn, and up and down. I think it suits a three year old as well as older kids. Or you can take your trail bike for a spin on the outer track along the Waimak."
