About the Business
Welcome to Northern Health School - Regional House Unit, located at 60 Khyber Pass Road in Auckland, New Zealand. We are an establishment and point of interest that serves as a school for school-aged students who are too unwell to attend their regular school. As one of three health schools in New Zealand, we provide both community and hospital-based teaching to ensure that every student receives an education, regardless of their health condition.
At Northern Health School, we take pride in offering individualized programs tailored to meet the unique health and education needs of each student. Our integrated service is truly one-of-a-kind, allowing our dedicated teachers to provide a seamless educational experience for every learner. We also have a close relationship with the other two health schools in New Zealand, making our services nationally recognized.
Our core values revolve around the learner, with a commitment to learning and their overall well-being. We believe in compassion, achieving learner-centered goals, and respect for culture, diversity, and each other. Our goal is to provide equity of opportunity for all learners, no matter their circumstances or aspirations.
The Northern Health School Board is dedicated to ensuring the best possible education and support for our students. We have recently undergone an Education Review Office review, and we are pleased to share the positive results with our community. The review highlighted our staff's hard work in supporting students through individualized programs and developing links with local communities, including local Iwi.
We are also focused on improving the skills and capabilities of our staff. This includes providing Beyond Diversity training for all staff and Te Tiriti o Waitangi training for the Board, which has led to the adoption of a Te Tiriti Policy for the school. We are committed to prioritizing student well-being and have implemented goals in our charter to address this important area.
The Northern Health School Board ensures that the principal's performance appraisal is conducted in a timely manner, with the inclusion of external contractors. We have also updated policies mentioned in the review as part of our regular policy review cycle. We have a sound complaints policy framework and meeting procedure in place to address any concerns.
Reporting on student progress has been a challenge for our school, given the short periods of time many students spend on our roll. However, we are actively working on implementing the Learning Progressions Framework to track student progress and analyze trends across time, ethnicity, gender, and health conditions. This framework provides more detailed information for a larger number of students than ever before.
Overall, the Northern Health School Board is confident in the high level of support we provide to students and their whanau (families). We are committed to reflection and improvement, ensuring that our students receive the best possible education and support during their time with us. Thank you for visiting our webpage, and please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or inquiries.
Reviews
"Some individual teachers were wonderful and quietly did a good job. There is a lot that is good opportunity in the health school. Its a shame about the factors below. TRUST BOARD The appointed non staff Trust Board members seemed to follow the staff leadership rather than act with enough of their own expertise, and knowledge to reliably provide needed checks and balances on the staff members of the Board. COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE The school complaints procedure has comparatively little detail. It leaves staff at each level, to mostly decide how to do things. However I saw an absence of reasonably skilled listening by staff in these situations. Outcomes I saw were very often unecessarily poor. At times, the child was treated poorly or more harshly by the staff, straight after a complaint had been made and this was a worry. NO RELATIONSHIP REPAIR PROCEDURE USED When a staff member in the small base class at NHS mishandled the student and distressed them, albeit not intentionally, there was no procedure for healing the resulting rift. That same staff member was in time, forced upon the student as their individual teacher. The assignment was traumatic for the student and failed. STUDENTS AND THEIR SPECIAL NEEDS Similar to above, at times, and in the last couple of years particularly, for this student, the school made decisions without adequate understanding of the student's special needs, ignoring advice from parents and the student, and avoiding consulting first with the child's therapist. This resulted in a lot of unecessary trauma to the student. As an example, the student's teacher advised us at a meeting, that unless the child attended at least one subject in a normal class at Northcote College in the next year, that NHS would refuse all services. This was presented as a fait accompli, not as up for any group decision. The child had a major health crisis by trying desperately to comply, and was out of all education for some time afterwards and never rejoined a class until a long time later."
