Reviews
"Steep climb at start but amazing bush, undergrowth and view at the top. Hard on the knees on the return, if you choose to head up and down on same track. Views to Wainui valley and across the harbour to city & wind turbines in the distance. Can be exposed to the winds at the top. Enjoyable walk and decent work out up."
"Has a bit of everything, super views, challenging sections and a real sense of remoteness, yet so close to home. Love this track. Option of a round trip by getting to the river then heading down to big bend and up the Mt McKerrow track and back along the ridge and out the Whakanui. Roughly six to seven hours and great sense of achievement....although be sure to check the weather forecast first!!"
"Excellent track, amazing that it's accessible from a bus stop! Really dense rainforest scenery and a good mix of steep uphill and flat ridges"
"Great track with heaps of amazing trees. Saw some jet black fungi that I've never seen anywhere else."
"Good rougher alternative to the 5 mile track without having to drive all the way down the coast road to the official Rimutaka State Forest Park entrance. Lovely bush, lots of birds. The East Whakanui & point 711 may need a little more navigation experience as the track is not so obvious. However the main track is well marked with orange markers. Great views of Mt Matthews. Took me 3 hours to the river."
