Welcome to the Pollen Island Marine Reserve, located in Auckland, New Zealand. This establishment is not only a park and a point of interest but also an important marine conservation area.
Pollen Island Marine Reserve is home to a diverse range of sea birds and waders, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Keep your eyes peeled for various species including rare birds that can be spotted in this area.
To fully experience the beauty of the marine reserve, we recommend exploring it by kayak or other small boats. You can launch your kayak from the boat ramp at the end of Walker Rd in Point Chevalier. However, please be aware that the majority of the reserve is highly tidal, so be cautious not to get stuck in the mud!
The marine reserve is bordered by the industrial suburb of Rosebank Peninsula to the south and the residential area of Waterview to the east. If you want to access the inner parts of the reserve, head towards Traherne Island on the southern side of the motorway. This area can be explored during mid-high tide or from certain shoreline points indicated on the map. You can reach these points through side roads from Great North Road, which lead to esplanade reserves. Additionally, there are great views of the reserve from the Northwestern Motorway (Te Atatu exit), but please remember that stopping on the motorway is not permitted for safety reasons.
When visiting the marine reserve, it is important to respect the environment and follow the rules. Fishing or disturbing any marine life within the reserve is strictly prohibited. This includes taking or killing fish, crustaceans, shellfish, seaweed, shells, or rocks from the beach. The protection of these resources ensures the preservation of the marine ecosystem.
Boaters, including jet skis, are required to maintain a speed limit of five knots within 200 meters of land, including shell banks, within the marine reserve area. This regulation helps to protect the delicate balance of the marine environment.
Please note that dogs are not allowed in the marine reserve area as they pose a threat to the rare birds that inhabit the area.
Pollen Island Marine Reserve is an important estuary, where the river meets the sea. Estuaries are unique and diverse, ranging from small lagoons to extensive wetland harbour systems. They play a vital role in supporting various ecosystems and are worth exploring and appreciating.
