Welcome to Te Ara, an exceptional educational institution located in Wellington, New Zealand. Situated at 14-6 Fore Street, we are a specialized school that caters to secondary-aged students facing learning and/or behavioral barriers. Our main goal is to provide the necessary support and tools for these students to overcome their challenges and reintegrate into mainstream schooling, while equipping them with vital life skills for future education and potential career paths.

Te Ara is a unique educational center, boasting a dedicated team of 5 staff members, two of whom are funded by the Ministry of Education. With a student body of approximately 20 individuals, we prioritize meeting the specific needs of each student. We understand that mainstream schooling may not always be the right fit for every student, especially when it comes to social or behavioral barriers. At Te Ara, we offer a more focused and supportive learning environment, empowering students with the confidence and skills they need to progress on their individual learning journey.

Our approach involves helping students recognize and nurture their individual strengths, enabling them to set goals that align with their personalized learning plans. To ensure a comprehensive curriculum, we follow the NCEA curriculum provided by Te Kura (The Correspondence School).

With over 25 years of experience, Te Ara has firmly established roots within the Wellington community. However, we heavily rely on the support of our generous sponsors to partially fund our school. We are grateful for the assistance provided by these amazing individuals and groups who contribute to our continued success and growth.

Although we receive a small grant from the Ministry of Education, we actively seek substantial funding from our sponsors to maintain the integral components of our supportive and educational environment. One example of such an essential element is the wages of our dedicated youth workers.

If your child attends one of our 10 linked schools, we invite you to get in touch with the dean or guidance counselor to learn more about our referral process and arrange a visit. This visit will provide the student with an opportunity to determine whether Te Ara is the right fit for them.
