Watercare Coastal Walkway Māngere, Auckland 2022
About the Business
Welcome to Watercare Coastal Walkway, located in Auckland, New Zealand. Our establishment is a park and point of interest that provides access to the beautiful Mangere Ihumatao foreshore, a stretch of coastline steeped in cultural history. This area is characterized by the majestic Mangere Mountain and Puketutu Island, ancient volcanoes that dominate the landscape.
As you stroll along the restored beaches of our walkway, you will have the opportunity to witness the incredible sight of migratory wading birds seeking refuge from the northern winter in our harbor. These birds are just a glimpse of the diverse wildlife that call this area home.
You can embark on your journey from either Ambury Farm Park or the Otuataua Stonefields, depending on your preference. If you're looking for a shorter walk, you can start at Oruarangi Creek or Creamery Road near the treatment plant. However, please note that the section of the walkway from Māngere Lagoon to Island Road is temporarily closed until October 2023 due to Central Interceptor works.
Our walkway not only offers a scenic experience but also showcases New Zealand's largest marine restoration project. As part of our upgrade to the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant, we removed 500 hectares of oxidation ponds, reconnecting the original foreshore with the sea. This restoration project has had a positive impact on the local ecosystem, providing a thriving habitat for a wide range of birdlife.
Since 2004, Watercare and local community groups have joined forces to plant over 270,000 native trees along the walkway. These trees not only beautify the area but also serve as a vital source of food and shelter for the diverse bird species that reside here.

"Beautiful scenery, adorable swan. A serene and cozy place. Good for an easy walk."
"Very beautiful walks but long as! We've repeatedly gotten lost on the tracks as there is very confusing signage and indistinct paths that turn out to be dead-ends (e.g Puketutu Island, access from Ambury Park, etc). Still worth giving it a shot if you plan your route carefully though. We have even brought the bikes which was a rewarding experience."
"Peaceful walk with Ducks, Geese in the water to watch. Just needs a path on one side for safety"
"Such a beautiful area but the road leading to Puketutu island is disgusting and full of rubbish."
"A short coastal walk along this seperate island place which can be reached by driving."
