About the Business
Welcome to The Green Parrot Cafe, located in the vibrant city of Wellington, New Zealand. Nestled on Taranaki Street, number 16, our cafe is a beloved establishment that has become a true point of interest for locals and visitors alike.
But what sets us apart from other cafes? Our rich history and unique story. The Green Parrot Cafe was founded by Richard Alfred Leckner, a young man who embarked on a thrilling adventure at sea in 1917. Motivated by the desire to reunite with his brother Theo, who had joined the fight in Gallipoli, Richard found himself working as a cabin boy and kitchen hand on the cargo ship 'Tahiti'.
For four incredible years, Richard explored the breathtaking Pacific Islands, journeyed to San Francisco, and then back again. However, fate had other plans for him when he decided to jump ship in the bustling city of San Francisco at the tender age of 18.
With determination and a passion for the culinary arts, Richard secured a job at a restaurant located on the corner of Market and Farrelly Streets, near the iconic Union Square. Through hard work and dedication, he quickly climbed the ranks, eventually becoming the manager in 1924.
Inspired by his travels and experiences, Richard decided to bring a taste of his adventures back to his hometown of Wellington. Thus, The Green Parrot Cafe was born. Today, we proudly carry on Richard's legacy, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects his love for good food and great company.
Step inside our cafe and be transported to a world of culinary delights. Our menu is carefully crafted to showcase a fusion of flavors from the Pacific Islands and beyond. From mouthwatering seafood dishes to delectable vegetarian options, there is something to satisfy every palate. Indulge in our signature dishes, such as the Tahitian-inspired grilled fish with tropical salsa, or savor the comforting taste of our homemade island-style curry.
Beyond our exceptional food, The Green Parrot Cafe is a place where connections are made and memories are forged. Our friendly and attentive staff are dedicated to providing exceptional service, ensuring that every visit is a memorable one. Whether you're catching up with friends over a cup of freshly brewed coffee, enjoying a leisurely brunch with family, or simply seeking a moment of solitude in our cozy corner, you'll find a welcoming haven at our cafe.
Located in the heart of Wellington, The Green Parrot Cafe is not just a place to eat; it's an experience that captures the spirit of adventure and the love for great food. Join us on this culinary journey and let us transport you to the enchanting world that Richard Alfred Leckner discovered all those years ago.

Reviews
"Awesome cafe. Beautiful steaks cooked well. Their Mixed Grill has to be my favourite. The schnitzel is also really tender and juicy."
"Service a bit poor, menu was short of what's meant to be the meal ordered, chips tasted like theve been warmed up and not good value for money I've been a customer at this place for a long time how things have changed."
"Would give it 2.5 stars. While I recognise the Green Parrot's status as a Wellington icon, the standard of the food was just not worth the price unfortunately."
"Was recommended to try this place, I’m on holiday here in Wellywood these few days. Awesome that this place was established since 1926! Love the mixed omelette (has ham, mushroom and tomatoes!) and the pork chops. So old school nostalgia. Unfortunately the hot chocolate was nothing to shout about. Otherwise this would have been a 5-star place."
"This place offers good value for money. Good service, honest food. If you are hungry then stop here. Nothing fancy, just honest home-style cooking with generous portions. The restaurant service is all clean and good with friendly staff. The washroom facilities are situated at the back behind 2 closed doors. One improvement they could make would be to keep the extractor fan running at all times in this area."
