About the Business
Welcome to the Department of Medicine at the University of Otago, Wellington (UOW), located at 23 Mein Street in Wellington, New Zealand. As an establishment that focuses on health and serves as a point of interest and university, our department has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality teaching, conducting internationally recognized research, and providing valuable services to professional and community groups.
At the Department of Medicine, our dedicated team of academic and clinical teaching staff offers a range of postgraduate study options and ensures that undergraduate medical students at UOW receive engaging and relevant learning opportunities. Our teaching extends beyond the university campus to Wellington Regional Hospital, Hutt Hospital, and three regional partners in Wairarapa, Palmerston North, and Hawkes Bay DHB's.
Collaboration is at the heart of our department, as our academics work together locally, nationally, and internationally to produce ground-breaking research. Through our research efforts, we strive to inform the care and health of New Zealanders, with a goal of enabling people to live better and longer lives. Additionally, our staff actively engage in service by providing education, governance, and expert professional advice to various stakeholders, government bodies, NGO's, professional groups, and patient groups.
The Department of Medicine is comprised of four specialized teaching and/or research units, each contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge and practice. Our undergraduate teaching spans all three years of the Advanced Learning in Medicine (ALM) program of the Otago MB ChB, with the department playing a major role in the fourth, fifth, and sixth-year courses. The sixth year of training is coordinated across five hospital sites, providing students with a comprehensive learning experience.
In addition to undergraduate teaching, we offer postgraduate programs through the Rehabilitation Teaching and Research Unit (RTRU) and the Occupational and Aviation Medicine Unit (OAMU). These specialized programs provide in-depth knowledge and skills in their respective fields. Our academic staff also supervise individual doctorate and master's research studies by thesis, allowing students to pursue their own research interests.
Research is a core focus of our department, and we are actively involved in various areas of internal medical research. Our research encompasses disease mechanisms, new treatments, and clinical trials, with each of our specialized units contributing unique insights in their respective subject areas.
We invite you to take a moment to learn more about our dedicated staff and their activities on our website.
