The Crooked Elm 25 Laings Road, Hutt Central, Lower Hutt, Wellington 5010
About the Business
Welcome to The Crooked Elm, a true local pub with a distinctly English feel, located at 25 Laings Road in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. As an establishment dedicated to fostering the local community, our main focus is on encouraging conversation and sociability. To create an atmosphere conducive to this, we have intentionally chosen not to have TVs for sports and instead provide middle-of-the-road background music for your listening pleasure.
At The Crooked Elm, we take pride in offering a wide range of both mainstream and craft beers. In addition to popular brews, we feature exclusive creations from renowned breweries such as Black Dog in Wellington, Tuatara, Garage Project, Kereru, Bone Face, and Baylands in Petone. As one of only two bars in the Hutt serving draught Heineken (the other being the Butcher & Brewer), we strive to provide a unique experience for our patrons. We even have an old English hand pull serving real ale in true English style, and we are excited to announce that we will soon be pouring our own exclusive beer brewed at the Butcher & Brewer.
If you prefer wine, our carefully curated wine list offers a selection of European wines for those seeking new discoveries, as well as superb local organic wines. In the future, we plan to introduce selected and unique wines to further enhance your experience.
At The Crooked Elm, we pride ourselves on being gin specialists, offering 11 varieties from around the world for you to choose from.
When it comes to food, we specialize in good old English comfort food with a modern twist. Our menu features items such as handcrafted pies on IPA mash with gravy and real mushy peas, a true winner. We also offer a selection of mains at great value for money, all served with the casual and relaxed service that you can expect from The Elm.
As we continue to grow as a focal point in the community, we will be introducing daily offers and organizing exciting events. Keep an eye out for these updates!
Legend has it that over a century ago, a wandering musician rested under our fabled Elm tree during a waxing moon. As he sang a soulful melody, he awakened a deep magic within the tree, infusing it with a sense of enormous well-being and kinship. To this day, it is believed that touching the trunk of the tree during a waxing moon bestows the same sense of well-being upon the person. This spirit lives on through us, representing the heart and soul of the community. Come and enjoy the warmth and fun that is The Crooked Elm.
Our opening hours are as follows: Wed, Thurs & Fri: 12pm till late, Saturday: 10am till late, Sunday: 10am till 3pm, Mon and Tues: Closed.

"Great pub with hand pull ale, a rare find these days! Good selection of food and Eccles cakes that will keep you going for a few days!"
"Small piece of greasy fish with McDonald’s fries. No paywave, surcharge on credit cards no cash payments."
"Great cold beers and good food"
"Staff were so friendly and helpful, we didn't have a booking, but got a great table for 4 outside in the sun. The 2 men had the steak and my friend had the bangers and mash, they all raved about great they were. I had the smashed avocado, not quite as good unfortunately, eggshells and too much garlic. Would definitely go back again"
"Amazing steak the mushroom sauce was amazing! Service was really good! And the sticky date pudding also really yummy! I'll be back."
