Darling Downs Zoo 21 Baines Road, Pilton, Queensland 4361
About the Business
Welcome to Darling Downs Zoo, a unique establishment and point of interest located in Pilton, Queensland, Australia. Nestled in the picturesque Baines Road, our zoo is just a 2-hour drive west of Brisbane, making it a convenient and exciting tourist attraction for visitors of all ages.
At Darling Downs Zoo, we take pride in our commitment to preserving wildlife and providing a sanctuary for native species to roam freely. As you explore our grounds, please be mindful not to approach or disturb any birds, reptiles, or mammals you may encounter. This ensures the safety and well-being of both our visitors and the animals themselves.
While we welcome visitors from all walks of life, we kindly ask that you refrain from bringing your own animals into the zoo. This policy allows us to maintain a controlled environment and prioritize the welfare of our resident wildlife.
We understand that change is inevitable, and due to the declining health of one of our founding directors, we have made the difficult decision to offer the zoo for sale. However, rest assured that regardless of ownership, Darling Downs Zoo will remain open. We greatly appreciate your continued support and look forward to welcoming you during your visits.
Operating every day, including long weekends and public holidays (excluding Christmas Day), we ensure that our visitors have ample opportunities to experience the wonders of our zoo. Join us for our informative and engaging free talks, where you can learn more about our incredible animals and their conservation.
For those seeking a more personal encounter, we offer daily paid animal encounters with a variety of our magnificent wildlife. These encounters are immensely popular, so we recommend booking online in advance to secure your spot.
This year, our major fundraising initiative focuses on constructing a new home for our beloved Komodo Dragon, Balu. As these majestic creatures have recently been added to the endangered species list, it is vital that we provide them with a safe and spacious habitat. Your donations, which are tax-deductible for amounts exceeding $2, directly contribute to the preservation of these incredible creatures and the development of their new home.
Balu, who joined us from Prague Zoo in March 2020, has quickly outgrown his current enclosure and eagerly awaits the arrival of a new companion. Together, with your generous support, we can ensure the longevity of the Komodo Dragon species and continue our important work in wildlife preservation.
Thank you for being a part of Darling Downs Zoo's journey. With your help, we will create a state-of-the-art habitat for Balu and continue to protect and conserve the remarkable creatures that call our zoo home. Plan your visit today and be captivated by the beauty and diversity of Australia's wildlife at Darling Downs Zoo.

"This place is the best zoo in South East Queensland especially for the money. The guided tour is amazing the variety of animals is awesome they even let you hold a baby alligator for free if you there early enough. Staff was amazing Marlee the guide was super knowledgeable and answered all my questions. 10/10 you have to visit you can pack your own lunch to."
"Fantastic day out, friendly staff, lots of animals. You can feed some of the animals - food bags $2. Lots of park benches and tables & chairs to have a picnic (can bring in food)."
"I have travelled many parts of the world including Botswana and visited plenty of zoos and game parks and national parks. Nothing this close though. Seeing big cats this close was enthralling and our grandkids were mesmerised. For a small privately owned zoo, this is a highly recommended experience."
"I love this zoo. So many animals who all look really well cared for. Talking to some of the staff they seem so genuin and loving of their work. My partner has better photos of the bigger animals like the tigers and lions and zebra. So many animals to see. Less commercial which I also love. I don't have kids and still enjoy it but of course a great place for kids too. Some improvements coming as well so in about 6 months time it should be even better."
"Such an amazing Zoo with a great vibe. Nice drive from Brisbane and a great spot to spend your day or half. Recommend reaching around 9:30am, grab your coffee and get ready for the guided tours. A great opportunity to see the animals up close (as not crowded) as they are fed and kids have so much fun watching them eat. Lion, tigers, cheetah, Giraffe, Hippo, Meerkats etc. looked happy and engaging. The tour finishes around noon so right time to grab lunch (and another coffee) and enjoy some sun in the nice picnic area while kids can watch the snake as the zoo keepers bring them out. A fun day at Darling Downs Zoo."
