About the Business
Welcome to The Richmond Arms Hotel, located in the heart of one of Australia's most historic towns. Our grand sandstone hotel offers a unique Tasmanian experience, combining modern comforts with old world ambiance.
Established in 1827, our colonial style ensuite accommodation allows you to fully immerse yourself in the history of Richmond. The original building, The Lennox Arms Hotel, was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1888. However, the Commercial Hotel was built in its place and later renamed The Richmond Arms in 1972.
Our bar is open daily from 11am and features a wide selection of 10 beers on tap, local Riversdale Wines, and a variety of local spirits. If you're looking for a delicious meal, our Bistro Lounge serves hearty dishes and snacks, including a children's menu and daily specials. Don't miss out on our fresh seafood and cheese platters, which are a specialty of the house. And of course, our extensive wine list showcases some of the best local drops from Tasmania's renowned wine region.
For accommodation, The Stables are a must-visit. These converted stables have been carefully renovated to preserve the character of the original building and offer contemporary furnishings and bathroom facilities. They can accommodate couples and families of up to 6 guests in the Gin, Convict, Vine, or Wheat units.
Richmond itself is a picturesque village nestled among the lush vineyards of the Coal River Valley. Just a short 20-minute drive from Hobart airport and 25 minutes from Hobart's CBD, it's the perfect location to explore the region. The village is rich in history, with ornate Georgian architecture, stately heritage buildings, and charming cottages. Many of the original buildings have been converted into cafes, galleries, museums, specialty shops, and boutiques, all within walking distance of our hotel.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit Australia's oldest surviving arch bridge, the iconic Richmond Bridge, built by convicts in the 1820s. It's an elegant sandstone structure that still serves its purpose today. Another must-see is the Richmond Gaol complex, which predates the famous Port Arthur convict site. Wander through the gaol buildings, step inside solitary confinement cells, and get a glimpse into life in the 1800s.
During your time in Richmond, there is plenty to do and see. Whether you want to relax with a glass of Tasmanian wine, indulge in some retail therapy, or soak up some history, Richmond has something for everyone. Our friendly staff are always ready to provide more information and recommendations.
Make the most of your stay by sampling the wonderful wines and fresh Tasmanian produce that the Coal River Valley region is famous for. Visit our Bistro Lounge and Saloon for snacks and meals that cater to the whole family. And don't forget to try our Devonshire Tea and enjoy fresh coffee and country cakes.
Experience the best in Tasmanian hospitality and history at The Richmond Arms Hotel.

"Absolutely brilliant that we stayed there on our return trip to Hobart 2 days afterwards. I mucked up and thought that I had the same room ( ground floor for my dad) but I had not requested by name ( I thought they had one 2 bedroom). But they were able to accommodate us in an alternative ground level. Really friendly staff. And the shanks are top."
"Walking into the lounge bar from the side door we were overwhelmed with the stench of urine and dirty toilets. The room was dark and the staff were very, in fact too casual, all wearing casual rough looking clothes. The staff looked like they had just come in from gardening. We ate in the lounge area and were shocked to see how dusty and dank the bar was. No atmosphere, no music, and every time the front door was opened a gale blew through. The food was lovely, hot and plentiful. The whole meal prices were so expensive for what you got. Obviously relying on tourists. Over all, food great, expensive, generally the areas need a good clean. The staff may be a better look in a polo top matching rather than the dirty, over casual look. The toilets need a dam good clean and deodorising, over whelming stench like a public toilet stall. A good look is needed and a big clean up."
"Visited here for a family lunch. The menu had an awesome selection of pub favourites plus some other options - eg. scallops. The food came out pretty quickly and was really tasty. Warm family friendly atmosphere. Lots of groups having lunch here when we visited but didn't feel the area was too crowded. No plate was left with food on it when we left. Highly recommend."
"We arrived and were told our room wasn't ready (despite it being well past the check in time), we did get a free drink from it though. The rooms were okay, but the bathroom didn't look like it got cleaned regularly. The pub itself was fine, the food was actually pretty good. The servers very clearly didn't want to be there however and made a big show of it which was kinda disappointing but for anyone who has worked hospitality knows that feeling. Some people had only just gotten their food and they started to turn the lights off, which was really a show of not caring at all about the people in your pub to me. The location was good we walked throughout Richmond easily and there is plenty of parking. At the end of the day it is a pub"
"Very disappointing. Liked · The location was great, being in the centre of the village. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed dining in the hotel. Parking was good as it was adjacent to the room. Room was tidy and clean though felt "tired" but this is allowed for in the budget level room rate. Had an issue with double payment for the room which their reservation person sorted quickly. Disliked · We were in the "Gin" Stables apartment with the cool store motor going on and off all night very near to the double bed room. We had a terrible sleep. I mentioned this to the duty manager when checking out and suggested if continue to make this room available to guests they provide disposable ear plugs. Apparently the host hopes to replace the motor in the next few months. This does not affect the upstairs apartment when we asked the guests staying there. When needing to follow up about the double payment the next morning, it became apparent there are no hotel staff/night duty manager on site and only contact number goes to their reservation person which I find unusual for a commercial accommodation establishment."
