About the Business
Welcome to the Geography and Environmental Studies institution, located in Sandy Bay, Churchill Avenue, Australia. As an establishment and point of interest, we are proud to be a university that focuses on connecting with life across built, digital, and natural environments.
Our institution is comprised of the Schools of Architecture and Design, Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences, and Information and Communication Technology, all working together in a syndicate of shared leadership. This collaboration creates a vibrant center for world-class research, learning, and teaching. Our dedicated staff, students, and alumni possess the knowledge and skills to develop and deploy clever technologies and designs that transform places and movements both locally and globally.
Our mission is to learn about, teach about, and investigate distinctive cultures and ecologies that exist here in Tasmania and in many other places around the world. We are committed to both disciplinary expertise and interdisciplinary innovation, and we welcome others who share our passion for addressing today's significant challenges and creating sustainable, smart, connected, and caring ways of living.
The School of Architecture and Design aims to shape the world we live in by supporting students and graduates in envisioning and creating buildings, products, sites, and experiences that help tackle global challenges in diverse contexts. Our award-winning team offers a range of professionally accredited and high-impact programs based on world-leading research, student-centered inquiry, and hands-on and virtual experience in unique natural and social environments.
The School of Information and Communication Technology has a strong history of building and advancing ICT in Tasmania. Our graduates and academics engage in innovative research and entrepreneurial activities, with many starting their own businesses to compete and collaborate on the world stage.
The School of Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences focuses on understanding the relationship between humans and the natural, built, and digital environments. Our three disciplines address diverse problems with direct societal significance, such as using spatial data to pioneer research in human and physical geography, establishing smart systems and computational data modeling, and striving to develop sustainable designs.
Our research and partnerships have influenced policy both locally and globally, and each discipline has contributed to the establishment of internationally renowned projects. For example, our Syndicate research includes projects ranging from developing novel drone technology to understand our changing planet, to creating smart soil sensors to enable farmers to make informed decisions about irrigation.
Inclusion, diversity, and equity are important values to us, and our Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Committee (IDEC) plays a key role in developing and implementing initiatives to support a culture of inclusiveness within the School. IDEC addresses a range of issues, including matters related to indigeneity, disability, cultural awareness, bias, workplace customs, and gender equity.
We also collaborate with the College of Sciences and Engineering, industry partners, and active researchers to foster the use of wood as a quality and environmentally sustainable material within the built environment through our CSAW initiative.
The HIT Lab focuses on building advanced human-computer interface technology, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), to empower people and improve their quality of life.
Lastly, the TerraLuma research project aims to develop tools and algorithms for environmental remote sensing applications and aerial surveys using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This research is crucial for the sustainable management of our ecosystems.
We acknowledge the palawa/pakana peoples of lutruwita, upon whose lands the University of Tasmania stands.
Join us in our mission to explore, innovate, and create a better world through geography and environmental studies.
