Men's Baths on Blue Mile Wollongong, New South Wales 2500
About the Business
Welcome to the Men's Baths on Blue Mile, a historic institution located in the City of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. This establishment has a rich history that dates back to 1871 when the first gentlemen's pool, known as Clarke's Hole, was developed. Over the years, this pool has undergone expansions and renovations to become a prime swimming attraction in 1899.
The Men's Baths features a unique design that sets it apart from other swimming venues. The pool ranges from 4 feet to 7 feet deep and includes a concrete wall that allows it to remain full even at low tide. This innovative feature also enables the waves to roll over during high tide without posing any danger to those inside.
In 1916, due to the majority of men signing up for war, the Wollongong Council permitted women and children to use the Men's Baths under certain restrictions. This decision opened up the facility to a wider audience and further cemented its importance in the community. In the 1920s, a pool for toddlers was built beside the Men's Baths, providing a safe space for young children to enjoy the water. Unfortunately, this pool was washed away in 1930.
The opening of the Continental Bath in 1923 marked a shift in the primary swimming venue in Wollongong, and the Men's Baths took a backseat in popularity. However, it continued to serve the community faithfully. In 1932, the changing sheds were replaced with concrete sheds located further back from the pool. The remaining wood from the old sheds was distributed to local residents, showcasing the resourcefulness of the community.
During the 1950s, the toddler's pool was rebuilt, but due to safety concerns, it is no longer in use. Despite these changes, the Men's Baths remain a cherished institution and are still in use today. The Men's Baths on Blue Mile is not just a swimming venue; it is a testament to the rich history and resilience of the Wollongong community.
We invite you to visit the Men's Baths on Blue Mile and experience a piece of Wollongong's past while enjoying a refreshing swim in this iconic location.
