"Best school in Maitland and the Hunter region... honestly, it's the best school I've ever seen/visited..."
"I am a current student at this school, the Senior school in particular. On the level of staff... most of the teachers are very pleasant and are able to help most students succeed at an individual level. I feel connected with some of the teachers and feel relatively comfortable with staff. However.... I do feel as if sometimes the school preaches all this "anti-bullying" and "all acceptance" policies a little too much, and there is not enough action on it. I have a group of friends since I've had since year 7, but I struggle within the rest of the year. I know a lot of the stuff that goes on is usually inaccessible by teachers, but I wish there was a bit more monitoring of this stuff. I know the students are supposed to share about these things, but as a person with a religion who constantly gets belittled for it, I don't feel safe enough to bring it up with a teacher. And even if I were to, nothing would be done that would benefit me, because the amount of backlash I'd get from the students would be incredible. So yeah, academically, GREAT SCHOOL, HIGHLY RECOMMEND, has lots of opportunities co-curricularly.... but otherwise..... hhmmmm, think again. Oh also the school can be quite biased when it comes to picking representative teams for sports and in the drama world with school productions and things - I do a lot of activities outside of school because I don't want to disrupt my school life, but through auditions and tryouts.... the teachers just pick the students they like the best"
"I was a student at this school and I made a great bunch of friends. But this school let me down I was kicked out at the end of year 10 because I wasn’t in the top classes I wasn’t alone I was in a group that was shipped off to another school so we weren’t this school’s problem anymore. The problem was none of us were bad kids. We all just had our struggles with trying to get good grades. I think that’s what this school lacks is to being more open and having ways to help those who struggle with school work. If you know you child suffers in the classroom this isn’t the school for them."
"We thought long and hard about the financial commitment required to send our children to the Hunter Valley Grammar School but it turned out to be the best investment we could ever make for the most important people in our life. At this juncture I have four years experience with the Hunter Valley Grammar School and as both my children are attending the senior school, we are now at the halfway point of our HVGS journey. Both my children absolutely love going to school there and have made wonderful friendships and had amazing experiences. The beautifully kept grounds, the well equipped classrooms, the dedicated and attentive Teachers, the sporting facilities and first class coaches, the lovely families we've met and the joy of seeing our children thrive is what makes this school the right choice for us."
"My grand daughter loves going to school every day - and always has. HVGS is a nurturing and positive place in which to learn and just "be". The school's ethos encompasses the "Values for Living", and the tone of the school absolutely reflects those values in action."
