About the Business
Welcome to Glebe Park, a stunning 4-hectare establishment located in the heart of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. This picturesque park is a point of interest and a true gem within the city's landscape.
Glebe Park offers a range of amenities and attractions for visitors to enjoy. From its inviting stage and 19th century-style rotunda to its captivating sculptures and spacious grassy areas, there is something for everyone to appreciate. The park also features barbecues and playgrounds, making it an ideal destination for picnics and family outings.
As you explore Glebe Park, you will be immersed in a tranquil green space that exudes the charm and elegance of a traditional English park. During the summer months, the park's English elms and oaks provide much-needed shade, while in autumn, they transform into a radiant golden spectacle.
The park's borders are marked by a beautiful stone fence with steel railings, and access is granted through formal gateways. The park is intersected by paved paths, allowing visitors to easily navigate its grounds. Each of the park's ten gates is officially named, reflecting the rich historical background of the area since European settlement. Gate names include St John's, Galliad Smith, Campbell, and Canberry.
Glebe Park holds a special place in the community and is a popular venue for weddings, public meetings, festivals, and events. Please note that a permit may be required for certain activities.
It is important to note that Glebe Park is located on Ngunnawal Country, which has been managed by the Ngunnawal people for thousands of years. The park is part of a larger glebe, which was transferred to the Church of England in the 1840s by Robert Campbell, a prominent merchant and pastoralist. The smaller site within the glebe is home to St John's Church, which continues to serve its parish community. The glebe itself was used as a farm.
Glebe Park holds significant historical value and has been recognized by the National Trust (ACT) and Australian Heritage Commission for its cultural and architectural importance.
When visiting Glebe Park, it is important to prioritize safety and stay informed about any alerts or updates. The park is easily accessible from Akuna Street, Cooyong Street, and Bunda Streets, with pedestrian access available through various gates. Limited time-controlled parking is available outside the park on Coranderrk Street, Ballumbir Street, Akuna Street, and Bunda Street.
We would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Ngunnawal people, the traditional custodians of the ACT, as well as any other individuals or families with connections to the lands of the ACT and region. We recognize and value their ongoing cultural contributions to our city and region.
Come and experience the beauty and serenity of Glebe Park, a place where nature, history, and community converge.
Reviews
"Really enjoy coming here with my dog. Some nice walking tracks and a really cool barbecue facility. Lots of nice trees and a great place to unwind."
"Beautiful trees, green grass, playground, brick paths. A great place to spend some time with kids or relax in the shade with a book."
"It is a well maintained park with lots of seating.beautiful trees.a great place to relax in the city"
"This is a beautiful and well maintained park. It is especially nice in autumn when the leaves change colour and fall from the trees. The grass always appears to be green and well maintained and there are a great variety of flowering shrubs. The park rangers that look after this park do a great job! The park is always open and has public toilets that are (most of the time) decently clean. There are a few free use barbecue areas scattered around the park with ample seating and tables. There are also two playgrounds that have been well constructed and are suitable for most children. One of them was built only in the last few years. There is also a stage at the south end of the park for live performances. I haven't seen it used before but hopefully now that covid restrictions have eased we will see some live music there. Go sit somewhere in this park and enjoy the serenity!"
