Welcome to First Step and Highland Dance School, located in Isabella Plains, Ellerston Avenue. As an establishment and point of interest in Australia, we are passionate about bringing the joy of dance into every child's life. Just as children take their first steps, we believe they should also embrace a love of movement and dance.

At First Step, we understand the importance of teaching the basics and fundamental techniques while allowing children to explore and develop their sense of movement and rhythm. Our dedicated team of instructors not only view teaching as a job, but also as a passion. We strive to put the fun in fundamentals and create connections with our students to instill a lifelong love of dance.

One of our specialties is Highland dancing, which offers a unique opportunity to make new friends, build strength, improve fitness, and enhance coordination, all while having a great time. We believe that children and adults of all ages should have the chance to experience this fun-filled dance style.

In light of the current COVID-19 situation, we ensure that our lessons are conducted in accordance with the necessary guidelines to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Our lead instructor, Shannon, has been involved in Highland Dancing and the Canberra Highland Dancing community for over 20 years. Throughout her career, she has competed in national and international championships, representing Australia at prestigious events such as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland. Shannon holds teacher qualifications with the Scottish Dancing Association of Australia and has taught Highland to students ranging from 4 years old to adults. She also has experience teaching and judging gymnastics to young children.

Aleshia, another talented instructor at our school, started dancing at the age of 3. While initially focusing on jazz, tap, and ballet, she discovered her passion for Highland Dancing at the age of 5. Aleshia has competed in highland competitions around Australia and in Scotland, even performing in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. With her experience as a dance teacher, Aleshia has assisted at previous dance schools, teaching beginners of various age groups. She has also worked as a dance teacher for a private company, teaching a range of genres to primary and secondary schools across Australia.

In addition to their dedication to dance, both Shannon and Aleshia understand the importance of family. Shannon currently works full time as a primary school teacher, and Aleshia is a proud mother of two boys and a girl. Aleshia strongly believes that dancing is not just for girls, but for everyone to enjoy the movement, rhythm, and friendships formed through dance.
