About the Business
Welcome to Woodbridge, a remarkable institution located at Ford Street, 8254, in Australia. Situated on the banks of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River), Woodbridge holds immense cultural significance as one of the most important places in Whadjuk Noongar Country. Known as Mandoon, or Munda's Country, it has been a vital resource for the Whadjuk people for thousands of years.
In 1829, Captain James Stirling, the newly appointed Governor of the Swan River colony, chose 1620 hectares of this land to establish his property, which he named 'Woodbridge'. The name was inspired by the resemblance of the area to his wife's family home in Surrey, England.
Woodbridge has a rich history that spans several centuries. After Stirling left the Swan River Colony in 1839, the property was leased to various tenants until 1883, when it was purchased by Charles Harper and his wife Fanny. Charles, an agricultural entrepreneur, parliamentarian, and part-owner of The West Australian newspaper, embarked on the construction of a magnificent family home. Considered "the handsomest private residence that has yet been erected in the colony," Woodbridge also featured extensive orchards and a commercial nursery, showcasing Charles' innovation in agriculture.
In 1895, Charles established a school within the house for his 10 children and those of his neighbors. A decade later, the Church of England acquired the property, which eventually became Guildford Grammar School. From 1921 to 1941, Woodbridge House School operated within the premises. During World War II, it served as the Old Women's Home before being converted into an annexe for Governor Stirling Senior High School in 1964.
In 1968, Woodbridge was vested in the National Trust, which has since undertaken a significant conservation program to bring its many stories to life for visitors. When you arrive at Woodbridge, you'll be captivated by the serene riverside setting, making it hard to believe you're still in Western Australia's capital city.
Explore the house room by room and marvel at the grand architecture and décor. Our friendly volunteers will point out original Harper furniture and personal belongings that are still on display. Upstairs, immerse your family in our brand-new activity space, where you can engage in hands-on play and learn about the children who attended Woodbridge House School through school books and sporting equipment showcased.
Stroll through the grounds and admire the majestic jarrahs that embrace the house. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking views of the Derbarl Yerrigan and the neighboring rows of Verdelho grape vines in one of Western Australia's premier wine-producing regions.
To enhance your experience, we recommend indulging in a meal at Riverside at Woodbridge, our onsite café. Enjoy your food while taking in the uninterrupted views of the river and vineyard. Check out our full menu or make a booking for a truly memorable dining experience.

"It was a unique experience to walk through a gorgeous historical house. I fell in love with every single details."
"Wonderful spot to visit, full of history. Beautiful setting and a grand building that is well worth wandering through."
"Woodbridge home was built in 1885. Located beside the riverbank of Swan River in the Mandoon area. It has antics furniture, the architecture of colonial times, and many more surprises for the visitor to find out about this 136-years-old building. The fee is payable at the entrance to the building. Besides, there is a good Riverside restaurant across the garden. And there is a wooden jetty on the Swan River. The environment is also very beautiful. Certainly worth your time to bring the visitor to visit this Awesome Woodbridge at Mandoon. Home open from 1 PM to 4M, Thursday to Sunday only. Check the hour before you go, mate. Cheers! (2021-06)"
"Incomplete review as the house was closed. However my daughter went with her school and had a fun, historical experience (her class dressed up in late 1800s style) The grounds are well kept with picturesque views of the area including Guildford Grammar’s extensive grounds"
