As an establishment that focuses on health and is considered a point of interest, we are proud to be a part of the prestigious Japan Karate Association (JKA), the world's foremost authority on traditional Japanese Shotokan style Karate Do.

Our institution is built upon the principles and teachings of founder Funakoshi Gichin, who used the pen name 'Shoto'. Despite his wishes, the name 'Shotokan' later became associated with the first official Japanese Karate dojo in Tokyo in 1939. Funakoshi believed that there should be no place for different schools in contemporary Karate and advocated for the amalgamation of all styles to ensure orderly progress into the future.

Led by Jim Wood MBE 7th Dan Shihan Kai, JKA Karate-Do Australia is a member of the international JKA organization, with a vast membership in over 100 countries. This affiliation further solidifies our commitment to upholding the traditional values and teachings of Shotokan Karate.

At JKA Adelaide, we firmly believe that Karate is not just a sport, but a traditional Japanese martial art that should be practiced as such. While it can be an effective form of self-defense, it also instills discipline, control, and confidence in its practitioners.
