"Total farce! RSL-QLD utilise these clowns for conducting assessments for veterans applying for emergency accommodation assistance under the Veterans Homeless Program. Upon my initial assessment, they rejected me on the basis of having $2K in the bank - which I needed as a financial buffer to cover for bills and so forth. In addition they also rejected me on the basis of "other criteria", which they would not disclose. Thankfully I had an extremely exceptional RSL Case Worker who understood my case earlier, and rang these idiots up to ruffle a few feathers. 10 minutes later, OA rang up and by some stroke of miracle they changed their tack and approved my application. Luckily I never had to rely on their so called counselling service, as it seems to be rather very subpar and just merely glorified window dressing."
"Called Open Arms to confirm if they provide family counselling. They said yes. They rejected me because of a past DVO and family court matters."
"If you don't feel like jumping off a cliff just yet spend some time on the phone with these guys. Should have all funding taken away and investigated because it's all a facade, pretending to care for us Veterans."
"Just got off the phone with someone who said they can’t provide any couples counselling as our situation gives off “domestic violence” and that we can only do single sessions. Which I understood, but they are closing the application to couples counseling, which they already told my husband they would be doing 2 months ago and someone just got a hold of me today, just to tell me the same. Then when asked about my sessions, I said I can only get in on fridays as that’s when the counselor is available. Really? I feel like they just don’t want to have any of this on record in case it gets VVCS in trouble so it’s easier to reject it."
"Leaving a public review in the hopes that this may gain the attention of decision makers who can make a commitment to change. First time calling the 1800 number for crisis support. The voice on the other end was a friendly guy, but too quick to assume things from what little information I did provide. He offered "quick fix" advice to what he perceived as my core issues, rather than actually talking to me to get more information. It felt like he wasn't actually interested in hearing me, and his approach came off as judgemental. Sadly, I won't be calling again. I would like to suggest that support staff have access to training that incorporates counselling microskills and active listening, to enhance the support staff's capacity to engage clients and draw more accurate assessments of risk."
