About the Business
Welcome to the Queensland Children's Hospital Emergency Room, located at South Brisbane on Stanley Street. As an establishment dedicated to health and well-being, we are a vital point of interest for families in need of urgent medical care for their children.
At the Queensland Children's Hospital Emergency Department, we provide round-the-clock care and treatment for over 200 children and young people every day. Our expert staff are trained to handle emergency situations and are ready to care for infants, children, and young adults from birth to 18 years of age. We also support young people with pre-existing chronic conditions and mental health conditions who require immediate medical attention.
If your child suddenly becomes unwell or experiences a serious injury, and you suspect their condition could be life-threatening or causing severe discomfort, our Emergency Department is the place to be. You can rely on our dedicated team, available 24/7, to provide the necessary care and support your child needs.
In case of an emergency, please call Triple Zero (000) and request an ambulance. Alternatively, if you believe it is safe to do so, you can drive your child to our Emergency Department. We have a convenient stopping bay right outside our facility on Stanley Street. Please note that this stopping bay has a maximum occupancy time of 20 minutes. For more information about available carparks in and around the hospital, please refer to our "Travelling to Hospital" page.
Please be aware that our Emergency Department may experience periods of high demand, and we must prioritize care for the most critically ill and injured patients. If your child's condition does not require immediate emergency care, you can avoid longer wait times by seeking medical advice from alternative health practitioners. The healthdirect online symptom checker can also provide guidance on the appropriate healthcare options.
Upon arrival at our Emergency Department, your child will be assessed by a triage nurse who will ask questions about their symptoms or injury. This initial assessment helps us determine the urgency and severity of their condition, ensuring that the most critical cases receive immediate attention. We do not operate on a "first-come, first-serve" basis, as the safety of our patients is our top priority.
We understand that waiting with an unwell or injured child can be challenging and frustrating. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to provide timely care to everyone, and we appreciate your patience and understanding. Rest assured, the most seriously ill and injured patients will always be seen immediately, regardless of the department's busyness.
We strongly advise against leaving before a doctor has assessed your child. The triage process is not a comprehensive medical evaluation but rather a means of prioritizing patients based on their level of urgency. Please consult with our staff before making any decisions to leave.
If you notice that your child's condition is worsening or they are experiencing increased pain while waiting, please inform the triage nurse immediately. Your child's well-being is our utmost concern, and we will address any concerns promptly.
When it comes to traveling to our Emergency Department, driving your child yourself is an option if it is safe to do so. Our facility offers a stopping bay located at the front of the hospital on Stanley Street, right outside the Emergency Department on Level 1. Remember that this stopping bay has a maximum occupancy time of 20 minutes, after which you will need to move your vehicle. For information about the closest carparks to the hospital, please visit our "Travelling to Hospital" page.
If you reside in South Brisbane or the surrounding area, the Queensland Children's Hospital is your closest and most suitable destination for urgent medical attention for your child. However, if you live outside our catchment area, we recommend visiting the Emergency Department at your local hospital initially. You can use our "Hospital Catchment Finder" to locate your nearest hospital in South East Queensland.
For more detailed information about our Emergency Department, including eligibility criteria, catchment area restrictions, location details, and referral advice, please visit our dedicated emergency department page.

Reviews
"Dr Katie provided excellent world class care."
"Staff were incredible and took a lot of care of our son when needed. Yes there were wait times, as with any emergency room/centre, but this was expected and the wait time is quite simply based on capacity and symptom severity. The doctors and nurses were brilliant with our son, very experienced, friendly and great with supporting the parents."
"My daughter was COVID-19 positive. She was suffering from cold, fever, extremely cough. Asked for Paramedic help. THEY did a preliminary test on 26th July 2022. They asked us, whether they still need the medical help. We said we would. Since, she was coughing continuously. We were taken to the children's hospital at around 9:15 pm and was made to wait in the Orange room lobby. The nurses were extremely rude to us. We were made to wait at Orang Room no. 5 for 2 hours from 9:15 pm to 12:15 pm. The waiting rooms were scary with no one around. The waiting room was Orange no. 5. A COVID-19 child of 4 yrs and 11 months old, not allocating a bed to sit, making kid wait on the chair was more than 3 hrs without any support, no proper care bed. Seems like a lot if red tape. Was extremely disappointed by the care offered. When I inquired the nurse, she felt irritated and said other patients are waiting for more time. When asked about the bed, they said the beds are under cleaning. This is serious ridiculous way of treating kids. The nurse says we may still have to wait for more than an hour. Really disappointed by the way emergency is treating COVID kids. Please take some action. We were made to wait on Orange Room 5."
"However, cutting the long story short. We waited for good 5 hours and left with no one assisting my 6 year old son (because he was not very serious) seriously. Well they were waiting for things to get real serious to diagnose my son who was heavily breathing for reasons unknow to us then. Keeping the services only according to the name "Emergency", so if you are still not in a very critical situation, then please don't visit Emergency ward to get a quick assistance. As others were being assisted who came after us and left way before us, as a parent I am disappointed with the overall experience. I could have created a scene at the ward at night 11:00pm, but seeing kids and parents around me I kept my calm and left with a small heart. Thank You Hospital. 26-05-2022"
"Had taken my 5 year old to the emergency room and was made to wait for more than 4.5 hrs. On enquiry was asked to wait for a couple more hours. I had to leave the place to get him checked by another doctor urgently."
