"I was between jobs for three months in late 2021. Hays advertised a number of roles online of which I applied for. With 15 years administration experience under my belt and many long term roles, I expected Hays to be a positive step forward. They called me and asked to set up an interview over Zoom regarding a position they had going. During the Zoom call, the advertided role was never mentioned and the lady interviewing me showed little to no interest in my skill sets. It honestly felt like she was just making up her quota of interviews. At one point I noticed she was reading emails whilst I answered questions. At the end of the call, she said they would be in touch the following week. Three weeks later, I received a text at 8am asking if I could start a role for just the one day at 9am. After that, I heard nothing from them again. Being interviewed over Zoom by a judgmental 20 something who doesn't even have the basic decency to be up front about what they are looking for is a good sign that Hays are not worth their crust. I had a plethora of excellent referees and an extensive resume full of wide and varied experience but it seems I wasn't fit for purpose. The one comment she made during the Zoom call that stuck with me was, "It's surprising that a man in his 40s is still working in administration roles " Here's a tip Hays. Get some staff with actual experience to conduct your interviews. And, if you put people on your books, at least make an effort to help them find work."
