About the Business
Welcome to The Break, a leading institution in Elsternwick, Australia, dedicated to mental health, addictions, and wellbeing recovery. Our mission is to help individuals get back on their feet and live their best lives by thriving, not just surviving.
At The Break, we believe in building and supporting a prosocial and proactive fully-inclusive community. We are committed to developing resilience and connection, ensuring that no one falls through the gaps. Our innovative programs combine the latest findings in treatment approaches with cultural sensitivity, aiming to change the way people think about addiction, mental health, and disability.
As a non-discriminatory not-for-profit organization run by volunteers, The Break evolved from a multi-modality clinic established in 2002 in St Kilda East. We gained charity status and accreditation in 2018, and all donations to us are tax deductible.
We firmly believe that no one should be left to fall through the cracks. We advocate for everyone to have the opportunity to create and live a well-connected, rich, and meaningful life. We consider access to safe and secure housing, nutritious food, meaningful employment, and a living wage as universal human rights.
The Break supports individuals working through a broad range of issues, including homelessness, unemployment, addiction, trauma, psycho-somatic disorders, psychological problems, disability, physical ailments, isolation, and loneliness. We are here to provide the necessary support and resources to help individuals overcome these challenges and thrive.
We acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea, and community. Our people live and work on the traditional country of the Yaluk-ut Weelam Clan of the Boon Wurrung, Bunurong, Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, and the Taungurung Peoples of the Kulin Nation. We recognize and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs, and relationship with the land, understanding their continuing importance to the Yaluk-ut Weelam, Bunurong, Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, and the Taungurung people living today.
We extend our respect to their Elders, both past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. Join us at The Break and embark on a journey towards a brighter future filled with hope, support, and empowerment.

"The Break support a wide range of individuals across Melbourne. For me, the break has been that place in which I have been trained, learnt but also, on a personal level, a place that I can count on, in terms of my mental health. Outdoor activities, free counselling, a sense of community, support/peer activities make this organisation an important part of our city. Within an important aim and that should be recognized and supported for our communities. Shout out The Break!"
"As an undergraduate student, The break has given me a lot of new perspectives. I have received a lot of wonderful knowledge and it has given me push start to enter the social work fields. The volunteers and staff are very welcoming and supportive. They provide a wide range of amazing services and programs for individuals of all ages and gender. Definitely making world a better place to live in!"
"The Break organisation is a five star organisation for me as they offers free counselling. The counselling session was just so awesome and it does helped my self confidence back and mental health matters. Plus the offer a Womens Circle Counselling which would definitely helps you express yourself as a woman. Plus people who worked at the Break are so kind and approachable. Highly recommend them."
"I am most impressed with The Break, and have found Greg and his team to be 100 % professional, caring and accommodating to my needs. I felt totally comfortable in a safe, caring and supported environment, where sensitivity and empathy is shown at all times towards all. Highly recommend The Break."
"I had the pleasure of attending several programs offered by this amazing not-for-profit organization, and I have to say, they truly go above and beyond in their efforts to serve the community. From their free kayaking sessions to their art and craft classes, there is something for everyone to enjoy and benefit from. One program that stood out to me in particular was their presentation on anger management. The facilitator was knowledgeable, compassionate, and provided practical tips and tools for managing anger in a healthy way. It was clear that they truly care about the well-being of their participants and are dedicated to helping them lead happier and healthier lives. Overall, I cannot recommend this organization enough. Their commitment to serving the community is truly inspiring, and I look forward to attending more of their programs in the future. Thank you for all that you do!""
