About the Business
Welcome to Cotter Academy of Highland Dancing, located in the heart of Paddington, Fernberg Road, 97. As an establishment that combines elements of a gym, health center, and point of interest, we are dedicated to promoting the art of Highland Dancing in Australia.
Highland Dancing originated in Scotland during the 19th century and has since captivated dancers worldwide. Today, dancers aspire to perform with grace, strength, ease, and endurance. This traditional dance form requires precise footwork, flawless control, and a combination of upper body, arm, and leg strength. Not only is Highland Dancing a beautiful art form, but it also offers numerous health benefits. It improves flexibility, confidence, coordination, and self-discipline, all while getting you fit!
At Cotter Academy of Highland Dancing, we place a strong emphasis on creating a nurturing and fun environment for our students to develop their technique and strength. We offer classes to all genders, starting from the age of 2. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, you are welcomed to join us on this journey. Our weekly group classes are held throughout the school terms, providing a consistent learning experience.
For those looking for personalized attention, we offer private lessons that focus on refining your technique. These one-on-one sessions are ideal for individuals who want to take their dancing to the next level.
Our classes cater to children as young as 2, introducing them to the wonderful world of dance. Through our Little Leapers classes, children learn basic dance principles such as timing and tempo. These classes also aid in the development of motor skills, discipline, coordination, and listening skills.
We encourage our dancers to compete in at least one competition per term, as this helps them set goals and work towards achieving them. Our academy offers a range of levels, from Primary (4-6 years) to Premier (open), allowing dancers to progress at their own pace.
In addition to regular classes and competitions, we also perform at various events, including black-tie events, local school fetes, and community gatherings. Our displays showcase traditional Highland dances as well as choreographed items, captivating audiences with our artistry and skill.
For those interested in taking exams, we hold them in June. Cotter Academy uses the NDAA syllabus, starting from pre-grade and running through to teachers. Exams consist of barre, center-work, theory, and dances. Students are encouraged to sit one exam per year, providing a goal to work towards and a sense of accomplishment.
If you're looking for a unique way to get fit and active, we also offer Highland Hustle, a dance-based fitness workout for adults of all shapes and sizes. This class requires no prior dance experience and is a fun way to improve your fitness levels.
Don't just take our word for it - hear from our satisfied parents and students! Many have seen tremendous growth in their children's confidence, fitness, and overall enjoyment of dance. Our dedicated and experienced teacher, Amalia, genuinely cares about her students and strives to help them achieve their best. The supportive environment at Cotter Academy has also allowed students to develop beautiful friendships.
If you're new to Highland Dancing and would like to get a taste of what we offer, we invite you to take advantage of our 1 class free trial. Simply register your interest, and we'll book you in at a time that suits you.
We understand that not everyone can commit to a full term of classes due to busy schedules. That's why we offer Highland Dancing classes on a casual basis. However, for the best value for money and to fully immerse yourself in the dance experience, we recommend our 10-week term accounts that align with Queensland school terms.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced dancer, our classes are designed to help you build your overall ability and skill level. Private lessons are also available for those who want to focus on specific technical weaknesses and develop a strong technique.
If you're ready to embark on a journey of dance and self-discovery, get in touch with us today to enquire further or book a private lesson. At Cotter Academy of Highland Dancing, we are committed to helping you realize and achieve your dancing goals.

"My daughter has been learning with Amalia at Cotter Academy for over 2 years. My son has also started this year after seeing how much his sister loves going. Amalia is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares about her students and strives to help them achieve their best. All students are welcoming and my kids have made some beautiful friendships. I highly recommend Cotter Academy."
"I’ve done highland dancing for most of my life, am a former dancing teacher myself and I now have a little boy who’s danced with Amalia for almost 3 years. I can say from the perspective of a dancer, teacher and a mum that Amalia is just fantastic, I couldn’t speak more highly of her. She’s was a champion herself only years ago - which makes her fairly unique as a studio owner - and she’s a judge so she knows what’s expected of dancers in competition. She’s knowledgeable and firm but lovely and kind, and my little boy absolutely loves his classes and his dancing."
