QASMT oval is the heart of Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology, a selective school for high-achieving students. I was lucky enough to get accepted into QASMT when I was in year 10, but I was also very nervous and insecure. I felt like I did not belong there, that I was not smart enough, that I would fail miserably. I had low self-esteem and no confidence in myself. That changed when I stepped into QASMT oval for the first time. It was a sunny day, and the oval was buzzing with activity. There were students playing soccer, cricket, rugby, frisbee, and other sports. There were also students sitting on the grass, reading books, chatting, or just enjoying the fresh air. There was a sense of camaraderie and joy that was contagious. I felt welcomed and accepted. I decided to join a soccer team, even though I had never played soccer before. It was one of the best decisions of my life. My teammates were supportive and encouraging, and they taught me the skills and rules of the game. They also taught me how to work as a team, how to communicate effectively, how to handle pressure and challenges, and how to have fun. They became my friends, and we shared many memorable moments on the oval. QASMT oval also helped me academically. It gave me a break from the rigorous curriculum and the stressful exams. It gave me a chance to relax and recharge my mind and body. It gave me a balance between work and play. It also inspired me to learn more about science, mathematics, and technology, as I saw how they applied to sports and nature.
