About the Business
Welcome to Christmas Hills Hall, located at 787 Ridge Road in Christmas Hills, Victoria, Australia. Our institution is a point of interest and a beloved establishment in the community.
At Christmas Hills Hall, we proudly acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders, both past and present, and those who will emerge in the future.
Our hall boasts two beautiful function rooms: the One Tree Hill Room and the Sugarloaf Room. These versatile spaces are perfect for hosting a variety of events, including concerts, art shows, masquerade balls, information sessions, and ceremonies. Whether you're planning a weekend function, a weekday event, or simply need to rent the space by the hour, we have flexible options to accommodate your needs.
Operated by the Christmas Hills Mechanics’ Institute Hall Committee of Management Inc., our hall is a community asset. As a not-for-profit organization, all income generated from our events is used for the upkeep of the hall and other community benefits. By choosing to host your event at Christmas Hills Hall, you are contributing to the preservation of this cherished local landmark.
The history of Christmas Hills Hall dates back to 1877 when the first Mechanics’ Institute was constructed on the site now occupied by the Sugarloaf Sailing Club. Unfortunately, a fire in 1893 destroyed the original building. However, it was rebuilt and opened in 1895 on its present location, thanks to the generosity of Thomas Young, a prominent member of the Christmas Hills Community.
In 1995, to commemorate the Institute's centenary, the Harold Muir Hall was added to the existing building. This new room was named after Harold Muir, a dedicated trustee of the Institute. After the devastating 2009 fires, the original hall dating back to 1895 was demolished and rebuilt with the help of grants provided by the Victorian Bushfire Recovery Authority. The new hall, which opened in October 2013, stands as a symbol of resilience and community spirit.
We invite you to visit Christmas Hills Hall and experience the warmth and history that permeate its walls. Whether you are attending an event or considering booking our venue for your own special occasion, we guarantee a memorable experience. Come and be a part of the rich heritage and vibrant community atmosphere that define Christmas Hills Hall.

"This is an excellent location, a great provision for the people Thanks very much"
"We hired the Christmas Hills Mechanics Hall for our wedding in November 2021. It was the perfect location for our wedding. We were assisted with viewing and admin by Sandy who was very responsive and happy to show us around the hall. The hall came with everything we needed for the wedding, we really only needed to bring the decorations! The lower paddock was perfect for our ceremony and there was plenty of parking for our guests. The view is stunning and our guests thought it was the perfect location. I would 100% recommend this location for anyone looking for a cost effective DIY location for a wedding."
"Lovely venue, very well maintained and an amazing atmosphere as it is in harmony with the surrounding flora. ❤️"
"What an absolute disgrace to think this hall was rebuilt using money people donated to the black Saturday tragedy, when it came no where near the fires. Im sure the loved ones of people who died would be shocked to learn how the donations were spent ( 2 brand new unused tennis courts). This hall is not owned by the council but a trust. How are the hall committee accountable for profits made using donations, do the victims of Black Saturday or the actual community’s affected recieve these funds? I could never hire this hall knowing how it was financed."
