About the Business
Welcome to The National Ballet School, located at 20 Carlisle Street in St Kilda, Australia. Established in 1939 by the renowned Australian performing arts pioneer Gertrude Johnson OBE, our institution, formerly known as the National Theatre Ballet School, is dedicated to providing exceptional dance training to students of all ages.
Under the guidance of our Artistic Director Damian Smith, a former Principal Dancer with the San Francisco Ballet, our highly accomplished teaching faculty offers a comprehensive dance education based on Vaganova and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) training. We are proud to be one of Australia's leading dance training institutions.
At The National Ballet School, we offer a range of pre-professional dancer training programs, including full-time accredited courses such as the Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma of Dance, as well as the part-time Elite Bridging Program. Admission to all accredited and bridging courses is through audition.
Our curriculum follows the internationally-recognized Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Syllabus, providing aspiring young dancers with a structured and accredited classical ballet training program. Additionally, our Nashies ballet classes are available for all age groups, offering a regular weekly class where students can pursue their passion, express their creativity, make new friends, and have fun.
In addition to ballet, we also offer regular dance classes in various genres including tap, jazz, character dance, contemporary dance, and musical theatre. These classes can be taken on their own or as a complement to ballet and dance studies, helping students become well-rounded performers.
For primary and secondary school students, we offer the Spring and Summer On Stage Holiday Program, which includes performance opportunities during the Victorian school holidays.
As a not-for-profit organization, The National Ballet School relies on the generosity of individuals like you to sustain our work. Your support enables us to continue providing high-quality dance education and training.
Located within the historic National Theatre, we are also home to Melbourne's leading dance classes at The National Ballet School and acting classes at The National Drama School. "Excellent class for my daughter, the teacher encouraged her to participate and she enjoyed the Ballet class very much - thankyou"
"We attended an instrumental music concert by Candlelight orchestra at this place. It is an old Victorian building with lots of space. Unfortunately there is no parking, so had to find nearby coin parking. The seats are very uncomfortable and very old. My one had broken spring and caused significant backpain. I saw few people sneezing, probably due to dust. Unless this place is properly maintained and taken care of, I really think it shouldn't be opened."
"The NTBS has been inspiring and teaching my daughter since 2013 when she first began learning there. She has loved how much fun the classes are, and how well-prepared she is for her exams. But the high point for her was always the incredible performances in that lovely Art Deco theatre. The online classes during COVID have been nothing short of exceptional. At a time when my daughter was so cut off from her "normal", having the constancy of ballet classes has made a world of difference."
"We are really grateful for the time you invested in to Coco prior to her exam. It was a real privilege for her to have such good quality teaching to polish her in preparation for the exam. It has cemented her mum's decision to move her over to study with the National Theatre. I know she moves into Grade 4 technically stronger and more prepared than she would have without your incredible support. Thank you so much, we are very grateful."
"The National Theatre Ballet School has given my two children a great love of dance and performance wrapped up with passion and self discipline. They have made great friendships and look forward to many of the productions on the home stage at The National Theatre every year. A terrific dance school"
