The Rocks Cafe 99 George Street, The Rocks, New South Wales 2000
About the Business
Welcome to The Rocks Cafe, located at 99 George Street in the heart of Australia's rich heritage. This historic establishment has a fascinating story that dates back to the country's early beginnings.
With a history tracing back to 1788, 99 George Street has been a part of Australian heritage for centuries. Originally, it was a part of the first hospital grounds, situated just south of the current site. The Assistant Surgeon's residence, once occupied by Francis Greenway, a convict architect transported for forging a building contract, stood proudly on this land in 1814.
In 1861, the buildings at 95-99 George Street were mysteriously vacated and subsequently demolished. However, the land did not remain vacant for long. Around 1867, the present building was constructed, continuing the legacy of this iconic location.
Today, The Rocks Cafe stands as a testament to the rich history of Australia. As a cafe, restaurant, and store, it offers a unique experience for locals and visitors alike. "We had kangaroo Burger (out of curiosity) and it was really tender and juicy. They had variety of very good looking cakes however, I couldn't try as burger itself was very filling. I liked that smoking was not allowed even outside seating areas. Toilets were super small, I've never seen that small hand wash basin. Staff was friendly and pretty :) Overall, highly recommended."
"Stopped in for dinner. Sat outside and had a wonderful time. Service was great, food excellent as was the wine. It was very calm night so that made the atmosphere just right sitting outside with heater on."
"24 June 2023 Bacon & Egg Roll (Pic 1), I ❤️ this, good and tasty. Must try. Others are ok too. it looks like their cooking is on the saltier side. Over all are good."
"Loved the cakes that we ate -- a chocolate cake with ice-cream and a carrot cake with cream on the side. The herb and garlic bread took us to a new level. Strongly recommend the place if you want to have delicious food and great ambience."
"During my visit to The Rocks Cafe, I had the pleasure of trying their delicious cottage pie, which was featured as their weekly special. It was a truly satisfying and flavorful dish, and I enjoyed every bite of it. The pie was warm and cozy, with a thin and flaky pastry crust that perfectly complemented the flavorful and tender meat filling. In addition to the cottage pie, my companions and I also indulged in a lemon meringue pie, which we shared for dessert. It was absolutely divine, with a tangy and refreshing lemon filling and a light and fluffy meringue topping. Overall, my experience at The Rocks Cafe was delightful, and I highly recommend their cottage pie and lemon meringue pie to anyone looking for a delicious and cozy meal."
