Welcome to Naamuru Parent and Baby Unit, a leading establishment in Australia for holistic, multidisciplinary specialist health care. Located at the prestigious Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, our purpose-built unit offers a tranquil environment with eight inpatient beds, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

At Naamuru, we understand the unique challenges faced by parents experiencing significant mental health problems during the perinatal period. That's why we provide comprehensive inpatient services for parents who are the primary caregivers for their babies, aged up to 12 months. Our aim is to create an environment that is parent and infant centred, family and carer inclusive, and culturally sensitive.

We believe in the importance of healthy attachment between parents and babies, which is why we admit both together to minimize the trauma of separation. We even encourage partners or alternate support persons to stay overnight, fostering a supportive environment that enhances the parent-baby relationship.

To meet the diverse needs of parents and babies, we employ a multidisciplinary approach. Our team consists of mental health nurses, child and family health nurses, a clinical midwife consultant, psychiatrist, paediatrician, peer support worker, and allied health staff including social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and exercise physiologists. All our staff are health professionals with the expertise to attend to your mental health needs and promote parent-baby interactions.

Upon admission, parents and babies will have their own spacious room with an ensuite bathroom. Each room is thoughtfully designed with a queen-sized bed, cot, and a daybed. In addition, our unit features communal areas such as lounges, dining areas, a fully equipped kitchen, and a courtyard, allowing families to connect and support one another. We also provide therapeutic spaces including group/activity rooms, a gym, play areas, a baby care room, and a retreat for relaxation and reflection.

To access our services, a referral must be received through the NSW Health mental health services. If you are not currently under the care of mental health services, your GP or local hospital can assist you in connecting with your mental health team. Please note that self-referrals are not accepted at Naamuru Parent and Baby Unit.
