The Rocks Discovery Museum Kendall Lane, The Rocks, New South Wales 2000
About the Business
Welcome to The Rocks Discovery Museum, a fascinating institution located in the heart of Australia's historic district, The Rocks. Nestled in Kendall Lane, our museum is not just a point of interest, but a must-visit tourist attraction that offers an immersive experience into the captivating story of The Rocks from pre-European days to the present.
Our institution prides itself on providing curriculum-linked and outcomes-focused learning experiences for students of all ages. With our engaging and interactive approach, we aim to create multi-layered learning opportunities that leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
As you step into our museum, you will be transported back in time to witness the transformation of The Rocks since 1900. This historic district has seen the slow demolition of its old structures, making way for the new. However, we strive to preserve the rich history and heritage of The Rocks through our exhibits and displays.
The Rocks Discovery Museum is housed in three buildings that date back to 1844, each carrying its own unique history. One of these buildings, Samson's Cottage, originally built in 1844, has been carefully incorporated into a reconstruction of this early house, offering a glimpse into the past. In 1991, this restoration project brought Samson's Cottage back to life, and it has since become an integral part of our museum.
Since our opening in 2005, our primary goal has been to showcase the archaeological artifacts recovered from The Rocks precinct and share the stories that define this remarkable place. Our exhibits will take you on a journey through time, revealing the secrets and tales of The Rocks, its people, and its significant role in shaping Australia's history.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, a curious traveler, or a student seeking an enriching educational experience, The Rocks Discovery Museum has something to offer everyone. Immerse yourself in the captivating narratives, explore the interactive displays, and leave with a deeper understanding of The Rocks' enduring legacy.
Join us at The Rocks Discovery Museum and embark on a journey that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the rich history and cultural significance of this remarkable part of Australia.

"A nice public museum detailing the history of the Rocks. We could interact with technology explaining the evolution of the area from prehistory into the contemporary era. Free entry, incredibly helpful staff and clean presentation encourages us to return for a visit."
"The Rocks Discovery Museum is a local historical museum. You will learn how the Cadigal living in and around the Rocks area at the time before the first European settlement. There are 4 permanent exhibitions at this museum: Warrane (pre-1788), Colony (1788-1820), Port (1820-1900), and Transformation (1900-present)."
"A small but interesting museum tucked away down an alley in the Rocks area. There is free entry. You do need to register your postcode or country of origin at the reception desk. Staff were very friendly and happy to chat. There is a lift, but I would not class the museum as accessible to wheelchair users due to the layout of the building. There were no accessible toilets."
